| NC’s autonomy plank to hoodwink people-Beg | | | Early Times Report
Uri, Apr 30- Reacting to NC’s poll plank of raising the autonomy slogan once more to deceive Kashmiri people, senior PDP leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Muzaffer Hussain Beg today said fascinatingly neither Omar Abdullah nor any other NC leader thought of their stance on the restoration of the State's eroded autonomy since their coming to power in alliance with the Congress. Even during the election rallies in Jammu region, where the party was backing the Congress candidates for the two Lok Sabha seats, the chief minister and his party colleagues did not raise the autonomy issue even once. It is only in the Valley that the chief minister has revived his party's stand on this issue. Beg who was addressing several election rallies in Uri Assembly segment of Baramulla Parliamentary constituency said NC itself has betrayed the people on several occasions on the issue of autonomy, sacrificing its stance for the sake of power. “For 22 long years the NC in its incarnation as the Plebiscite Front struggled for its demand for holding plebiscite to determine the future status of Jammu and Kashmir. But that demand was abandoned in 1975 under the Indira-Sheikh Accord when Sheikh Abdullah returned to power on New Delhi's terms. The party virtually forgot about its commitment on the question of the restoration of State's autonomy to pre'1953 level for the sake of retaining power. For NC retaining power was more important than its commitment on the autonomy issue’ Beg said. He asserted while the BJP stands for abrogation of Article 370 the Congress, which was mainly responsible for eroding the State's autonomy, favours status-quo. “The NC failed to achieve its objective of restoring State's autonomy to pre'1953 level when it enjoyed more than two-third majority in the State assembly. How does it hope for the acceptance of its demand when its strength in the assembly is not even one-fourth of the 87-member House and when even its allies sharing power with it are also opposed to such a demand Beg questioned and asserted that restoration of autonomy is only a political slogan for the NC to hoodwink the people and its real and only objective is to gain and retain power at any cost.
