| Protect Catholic Heritage Sites | | | Early Times Report Jammu The Executive Body of the All Jammu and Kashmir Catholic Sabha at its emergency meeting held under its President Mr. Lal Gill has taken strong exception to the order of the Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, Srinagar granting the Catholic Church Srinagar permission to dismantle buildings in the premises of the Holy Catholic Church of the Holy Family,Maulana Azad Road, Srinagar thereby flouting the relevant provisions of the Protection of the Heritage Sites Act 2005 passed by the Union Parliament under which it is categorically stated that no building shall be allowed to be torn down or raised within 100 feet of the Heritage structure. It is to be noted here that the Presbytery and the Church at the said site have been declared heritage sites having an age of over 125 years. These two structures remind the people of the coming of Catholic Christianity in the Kashmir valley in 1891 The Sabha has drawn the attention of the said authorities to its Order Nos: 454 of 2007 dated October 6 -2007 under which, at the request of the Sabha it had kept its Order No. 310 of 2007 dated Aug 27,2007 under abeyance which had authorised the Church to dismantle the heritage building. The Sabha has requested the Commissioner concerned to rescind its order permitting the Catholic Church to dismantle the buildings within 100 feet periphery of the two heritage buildings failing which the Catholic Community of the State shall be forced to take to the streets. It has also requested the Bishop Jammu-Srinagar not to allow a Prayer House site turn into a resting place for the visitors for which the structures are proposed to be raised.
