Police action on KP migrant voters widely condemned
5/1/2009 9:41:09 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, May 1- Several political parties have strongly condemned the police lathi charge on Kashmiri migrant voters here yesterday and demanded action against the responsible police officials.
Strongly condemning the police brutalities inflicted on the peaceful gathering of Kashmiri migrants near Education Directorate here yesterday, senior BJP leader and National Council Member Lalit Moza has demanded that a commission of enquiry should be constituted to pinpoint the officers responsible for the police atrocities committed on the peaceful gathering of Kashmiri migrants.
He said the migrants who had gone to polling booth to caste their vote on finding their names deleted form the voter lists, were peacefully expressing their protest against the procedure laid down by Election Commission for their voting which is not a vote facilitating procedure but in fact is stiffing voting. Apart from being subjected to a unique process of voting and thereby violating their basic and fundamental democratic right of voting which discourages and deters voting, the state on its part by draconian misuse of police further perpetuates atrocities on them, should they make a whisper of protest, he added.
He further said that complete failure of the voting process has been revealed by the incident at Nagrota polling booth also where a large number of voters were refused voting, on the ground that they did not figure in the voting list compiled for the polling booth at Nagrota even though they fully had completed the tedious and cumbersome procedure prescribed for migrants.
At Nagrota the concerned police officials of local police station fully lived up to its reputation of savagery and of being innocent of rule of law subjected the migrant voters to worst ever brutalities.
In the meantime the minority cell of PDP has strongly condemned the police action on Kashmiri Pandits who were demonstrating peacefully against the bungling in the voters list at Muthi.
In a meeting held at Party headquarters the speakers voiced concern over this barbaric action taken by the administrator an innocent people.
The officiating convenor of the Amarnath Yatra Sangarsh Samiti Brig Suchet Singh took serious note of the unwarranted police action against the Kashmiri migrants.
Questioning the motive behind the police action Singh said that the displaced Kashmiri Pandits whose names were not present in the voting list were only raising their voice at a distant place from the polling station and were not disrupting the ongoing polling.
Addressing media persons here today he said the Election Commission should relax the norms for migrant voters by not making it mandatory to fill M form before voting.
