| Ansari warns against re-imposing toll tax on fruit | | | Early Times Report Budgam, May 01 – Asserting that her party is a part of the people’s movement to press for reduction of troops and revocation of the special powers, PDP President Mehbooba Mufti has said that “We have always given voice to the people’s sentiments and the party is on the forefront of the movement for reduction of troops and revocation of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA),” she said. Addressing public meetings at Pakherpora and Batpora in Srinagar-Budgam parliamentary constituency today, Mehbooba said the party’s demand for reduction of troops and revocation of AFSPA is in tune with the people’s sentiment, and the Government must act on these issues of public concern before it leads to another mass uprising. “And PDP would be on the forefront of any mass agitation over the issue,” she said and added that instead of allowing the issue to snowball into mass agitation, taking cue from the public unrest in Khaigam and Bomai, the Government must act fast on cutting the troop strength from the civilian areas and revoke the AFSPA. Mehbooba said although the Government of India had taken some steps in this direction by relocating troops from orchards and other civilian properties following PDP’s persistence on its demand, the present Government’s shift of priorities has put these crucial issues of public importance on the back-burner. Addressing the meeting PDP candidate for Srinagar parliamentary constituency, Moulvi Iftikhar Hussain Ansari, while cautioning the Government against re-imposing toll tax and Value Added Tax (VAT) on export of fruit, said the PDP would take to streets to protest any such illogical move. He said the Government must immediately clear the apprehensions of the fruit growers and traders regarding re-imposition of toll tax and VAT on fruit as has been reported by some sections of the media. “While the PDP-led Government had abolished toll tax on fruit, it would be imprudent to annul that decision,” he said. Accusing the NC representative of the area of having exploited the people’s innocence for making personal fortunes, Moulvi asked Abdul Rahim Rather to show what he has done for the development of the area during the last 30 years. “I don’t think he has done anything substantial for this area except exploiting the innocence of his voters,” he said and accused Rather of acting as an advisor to the former Governor S K Sinha, known for his anti-Kashmiri stance and fascination for RSS.
