South Kashmir vote mood falls by 32%

Jammu, May 1: Keeping with the trend witnessed in first two phases, the third phase of the parliamentary elections in South Kashmir also saw the downward trend, registering a decline of nearly 32 percent compared to assembly polls last year.
While assembly constituency of Tral in Pulwama district registered a decline of about 46 percent, Noorabad assembly segment in Islamabad registered a decline of 20 percent, lowest in 16 segments that constitute the South Kashmir parliamentary constituency.
According to the official figures available with PBI, the sixteen assembly segments registered a voter turnout of 57.81 percent in last year’s assembly polls while as only 26 percent of 11, 65 and 951 registered electorate turned to cast their vote.
The figures suggested that the Tral segment which recorded 2.83 per cent on Thursday had witnessed 48.69 percent during last year’s polls. Pampore registered 4.65 (43.43% in assembly polls), Pulwama registered 14 percent compared to 40.84 in November-December polls.
Similarly, Rajpora witnessed a decline of 37 percent decline from 50.16 percent in assembly elections to 13 percent in Lok Sabha polls. Wachi recorded 19.65 on Thursday while in assembly polls it had registered 48.54 percent. Shopian constituency witnessed 17.92 percent in Lok Sabha, in assembly polls it registered 52.72 percents.
Noorabad witnessed 54.37 in LS polls while in assembly, 74.11 percent people turned to ballot; Kulgam witnessed 18 percent on last occasion while on previously it had registered 61.66 percent. Homeshalibug in LS polls registered 25 percent while in assembly elections it recorded 54.36, Devsar on Thursday recorded 33 while in polls for state’s lower house it registered 68.68 percent of votes.
The Anantnag constituency registered a decline of 20 percent from 41.33 in last year to 21.29 on latest polling. Dooru too registered the over 44 percent decline from 69.76 percent in last year to 25.65 on Thursday. In Kokernag 33.73 percent turned to ballots compared to 70.33 last year. Shangus in LS recorded 39.14 while in assembly polls it had recorded 69.25, Bijbehara 34.08 in LS while in legislative assembly polls it registered 60.75 percent and Pahalgam was second to Noorabad in registering a lowest decline, recording 47 per cent voter turnout in latest polls compared to 74.11 percent in assembly polls.
There was an over 25 percent decline in the number of voters in second phase of polls for Udhampur parliamentary constituency while the voting percentage in 20 Assembly constituencies of Jammu region which formed part of Jammu-Poonch Lok Sabha seat recorded a decline of 24.5 per cent.
B R Sharma, the chief electoral officer of Jammu and Kashmir, related the decline in voter turn out to issues concerning people.
“Assembly polls always witness large participation as local issues and interests are linked with the elections in comparison to Lok Sabha elections,” Sharma said.
