Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 3: In a remarkable display of environmental commitment and community participation, Government Degree College, Ghagwal organised a Mega Plantation Drive on August 2, 2025, under the banner of "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam." The initiative was led from the front by the college's Principal, Dr. Sujata Slathia, and was conceptualised, convened, and successfully implemented by Dr. Shivani Sharma, whose visionary leadership gave momentum to the noble cause. The event was inaugurated by Dr. Sujata Slathia, Principal of the College in presence of Mr. Ashok Kalsi, DFO Social Forestry, Kathua, Mr. Ashok Raina, Range Officer, and Mr. Manohar Lal, Headmaster GGHS Ghagwal. The event received strong support from the NSS Programme Officer, Dr. Vani Awasthi, whose coordination efforts ensured the active involvement of volunteers and smooth execution of the plantation. The drive was further strengthened by the enthusiastic cooperation of Prof. Vijay Kumar and Dr. Bavita Bhagat, Mr. Hardev, Mr. Sumeet, Ms. Amrita and Ms. Nisha and Mr. Avtar Singh, who played key roles in mobilising resources and extending logistical support. A day prior to the plantation, on August 1, 2025, the groundwork for the event was diligently prepared. A tractor and JCB were deployed to clean the designated area, mow the terrain, and dig pits, laying the foundation for a successful plantation drive. The event was organised in collaboration with the Department of Social Forestry, Kathua, whose technical expertise and sapling support proved invaluable. The plantation site came alive with the active participation of college students and the staff and students of Government Girls High School, Ghagwal, including their Headmaster. Over 50 saplings of various native and environment-friendly species were planted during the drive. The participants took a heartfelt oath to care for the young saplings and nurture them with dedication, promising to monitor their healthy growth and survival. The initiative not only aimed at increasing green cover but also fostered a deeper connection between nature and community, while spreading awareness about the importance of afforestation and environmental responsibility. The event stood as a shining example of collaboration between institutions, departments, and individuals working together for a greener tomorrow. |
