Early Times Report
Jammu, May 3: Pandits may still have an astrologinal role for matching Kundlis, but the metro culture of fixing up ‘eternal-bonds’ through marriage bureaus has finally taken roots in the City of Temples.
Marriage bureaus has arrived in Jammu some five to six years back but their engagement remained low profile with people looking down at this business with suspicion. Today, fixing up pairs is a thriving business with nearly three dozen such outlets operating in the City and even the rich and famous getting their assistance.
“The joint families are breaking to nuclear ones and people have hardly any time to find relations by tricks and trials”, says VK Gupta, a resident of Chhani Himmat, who arranged a relation for his son through marriage bureau last year. He adds, “it is unconventional but what all you have to do is to list your preferences with the bureau and they will keep on informing as and when suitable matches are found”. The last call has to be taken by the family by visiting the would-be in-laws and formalizing the relation, traditionally.
With the passage of time the priorities have changed. Now everyone wants to spend a luxurious life, which is only possible if both husband and wife are earning. To find a dream partner these days Jammu aspirants are seeking the help of marriage bureaus, which in turn has created the ideal condition for the mushrooming of such agencies in the city. So, the latest trend is bent upon proving the old saying that ‘marriages are settled in heaven and merely celebrated on earth’ wrong.
Well-settled eligible bachelors are nowadays getting themselves registered with various marriage bureaus to get educated and well settled life partners.
Significantly, the trend is getting popular not only among boys; even parents of girls are approaching various marriage bureaus to find a suitable match for their daughters. Earlier the marriage bureaus were popular among certain categories like overage people looking for the partners but now the situation has changed.
With number of girls enjoying the coveted posts like deputy SP, excise and taxation officers, labour officers etc, parents find it difficult to find a suitable groom of equal stature within their community. Compelled by these and other social circumstances, they are forced to seek the services of these marriage agencies. In one such case, a father got his daughter’s name registered with a marriage bureau, which ultimately managed to find a doctor match for her thereby unburdening him of his worries. “Her father was very worried about her marriage. However, after they got a suitable match for their daughter, they were very happy,” an employee of a bureau in Gandhi Nagar said.
Now the concept of working couples is becoming an accepted norm even among the most conservative families also. The employee said that the things have changed a lot. “The prices of the essential commodities are sky-rocketing, which is ultimately forcing women to opt for the jobs to supplement household income,” he said.
“Jammu is no doubt developing like any other city but still sometimes it is difficult to find a perfect match for a well employed girl,” he said. “We have to work hard to find the suitable match for them as there is a shortage of the boys who are employed,” he added. One of the most important factors, which these owners feel is that earlier there were joint families and it was easy to locate the partners due to large personal contacts nurtured over the years. The new trend of single nucleus families has almost started furthering the business prospects of marriage bureaus.
More than 30 bureaus have come up in Jammu city alone. Even the community centres have been opened to provide services to the members of a particular community. Dr Jagdish Thapa consultant Psychiatrist GMC Jammu when contacted, attributed the change in the attitude of Jammuites to their zeal for rising up. And, to have a qualified and caring life partner is also a must to provide better education to the children and lead a comfortable life.
