Replace arms with trust: Mufti
5/3/2009 11:09:35 PM
Early Times Report
Srinagar, May 03- Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has said the atmosphere of armed confrontation must now end completely with greater trust in the people of the State. “People of Jammu & Kashmir have always responded positively to the initiatives in improving the security situation and providing relief to the common man,” he said and added this had become the fundamental input in transforming the ground scenario after 2002 elections.
Addressing public meetings in Sonawar, Chadoora and Batamalloo assembly segments of Srinagar parliamentary constituency today, Sayeed said while the revival of political reconciliation process is imperative, it must be at the same time supplemented with measures that are economically beneficial to the State. “PDP visualizes and is striving for a space of dignity and opportunity for the people of Jammu and Kashmir in a larger paradigm of cooperative relationship between India and Pakistan,” he said and added the sense of siege that has gripped the people of the State in the wake of the partition will have to be addressed and their liberty to move along the traditional routes restored.
The PDP Patron said the greatest contribution of the PDP, while heading the Coalition Government, was that it facilitated not only peaceful resolution of the Kashmir issue, but also tried to build people’s stakes in the peace through ground-breaking economic and developmental initiatives. “The State had started fast returning to the path of peace and progress between 2002 and 2005 with significant political and economic interventions by the then Government,” he said and added that while facilitating resolution of the State’s political problems, the then PDP-led Government took some remarkable initiatives to turnaround the State economy.
Expressing concern over the sharp decline in tourist arrivals to the Valley, Sayeed said, ironically, for petty political gains, the present Government engineered an environment of insecurity and fear-psychosis leading to the collapse of the tourism sector. “The average five lakh tourist arrivals to the Valley between 2003 and 2005 have, unfortunately, come down to a trickle today,” he said and added that with some novel initiatives, the PDP-led Government had opened up Kashmir to both domestic and international tourists leading to a flourishing tourism sector.
Sayeed said cutting across the political affiliations and ideologies, various shades of opinion from the city must put their act together to ensure succor and relief to the people of Srinagar who have faced the brunt of the turmoil to the hilt. “We may be subscribing to different political thoughts and ideologies, but certain basic amenities of life like electricity, drinking water, better hygienic conditions, good roads, quality education and healthcare are required by every citizen,” he said and added that the residents of the city could claim their due share in such facilities only when they have adequate and inclusive representation in the government.
PDP candidate for Srinagar parliamentary constituency, Moulvi Iftikhar Hussain Ansari, party’s candidate for Sonawar assembly segment, Mohammad Ashraf Mir, Tariq Hameed Karra, Abdul Rehman Veeri, Javed Mustafa Mir and Peerzada Mansoor Hussain also addressed the meetings.
