Catalysts Of Change | | | Agriculture and allied sectors in Jammu and Kashmir are witnessing women-led development as the fairer sex is leading from the front. While addressing the 9th convocation of SKUAST-Jammu, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said that he was extremely proud that out of 8 gold medalists in post-graduate and graduate students, 7 were bagged by daughters. Out of 35 certificates of merit in PhD and Post-Graduate, 32 were awarded to girls. The women proving their mettle is a symbol of the rising influence of ‘Nari Shakti’ in Agriculture and allied sectors and they are driving innovation for sustainable agriculture and enhancing farmers’ income. Women in Jammu and Kashmir are increasingly becoming catalysts of change in agriculture. From climate-smart crops and pest management to organic farming and biotechnology, their involvement is deepening and diversifying. Women scientists, agripreneurs, and field experts are introducing innovations that make agriculture more sustainable and profitable. Their growing participation has brought resilience to the sector and a fresh perspective that prioritizes ecology alongside economy. LG Sinha emphasized the need for a robust innovation and modern technology ecosystem to support sustainable agriculture, mitigate risks, and strengthen farmer-industry linkages. His remarks also underscored the role of flagship initiatives like the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP) and the Competitiveness Improvement of Agriculture and Allied Sectors Project (JKCIP). These interventions are now visibly improving farmers’ incomes, aligning perfectly with the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has consistently placed farmer welfare at the core of national development. The “Beej se Bazar tak” (Seed to Market) approach in Jammu and Kashmir exemplifies a complete overhaul of the agricultural value chain. Real efforts are being made to translate laboratory research into land-level implementation, especially for the benefit of small and marginal farmers. In this transformation, women are not just participants but pioneers. Adding to the achievements, the inauguration of a state-of-the-art Ex-Situ Gene Bank at SKUAST-Jammu positions the institution among the top three in the country with such a facility. This will become a cornerstone for conserving genetic material and supporting long-term research and breeding programmes. Furthermore, the foundation stones laid for a 200-bedded Farmers’ Hostel and a Faculty Building will enhance the educational and research ecosystem, empowering the next generation of agritech leaders. |
