Shahid first Muslim IAS from Jammu

Jammu, May 3: A veterinary doctor turned IFS officer has become first Muslim from Jammu region to have selected to the prestigious Indian Administrative Services.
Dr Shahid Iqbal Choudhary a veterinary surgeon-turned-IFS officer has been selected for Indian Administrative Service (IAS) by the Union Public Service Commission, based on the Civil Services Examination 2008 the result of which was declared today. Choudhary scored All India 51 rank to get IAS in open merit.
Presently working as Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Srinagar, Shahid was selected for Indian Forest Service (IFS) in 2005 batch and allotted to Jammu and Kashmir cadre. An alumnus of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Science and Technology (SKUAST-J) Shahid completed his BVSC & AH degree in 2005. He has served as ACF Poonch and DFO Working Plan before joining as DFO in Srinagar later last year.
Shahid is incidentally first Gujjar ever to have been selected for IAS from Jammu and Kashmir. He will be third Gujjar IAS officer anywhere in the country.
Shahid has remained a meritorious student throughout the career and got many awards at State and National level. At LBS National Academy of Administration too he got L M Singhvi award and Director’s medal for various achievements. He has qualified for IAS with Sociology and Veterinary Science as optional subjects.
Hailing from Rehan village Tehsil Budhal of Rajouri District the 28 year IAS Officer is son of a Revenue Officer Aslam Din Choudhary and Shamim Akhter Choudhary.
This year only two aspirants from Jammu and Kashmir could get into the IAS. The other successful candidate is Rahul Langer of Jammu.
Meanwhile girls have bagged the top three ranks in the Civil Services Examination 2008 with Noida's Shubhra Saxena topping the test. While Sharandeep Kaur Brar has been placed second, Kiran Kaushal secured the third position.
A total of 791 candidates have cracked the exam for which written test was conducted in October-November last year and the interview for personality test was held in March-April this year, the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) said.
The candidates, who have been recommended for appointment, include 364 from general category, 236 from OBC, 130 from SC and 61 from ST group.
Thirty-year-old Saxena has done her B Tech from IIT Roorkee. This was her second attempt. Second topper Sharandeep Kaur has done her MA from Punjab University.
The top 25 candidates included 10 women. While 12 of them are from Commerce, Management, Humanities, Science and Social Sciences, nine candidates are from streams of Engineering and four from Medical Sciences.
A total of 3,18,843 candidates applied for the examination, while 1,67,035 appeared for the preliminary examination. Of them 11,849 qualified for the Mains but only 2,140 could make it to the personality test.
Varinder Kumar Sharma, who has been placed fourth, is the topper among male candidates. He has BE from Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh. He is physically challenged and succeeded in his first attempt.
Of the 25 toppers, 22 took the test in English, two in Hindi and one in Punjabi. While 11 appeared from Delhi, three took the exam each from Chandigarh and Chennai, two each from Bhopal and Hyderabad and one each from Kolkata, Jaipur, Jammu and Thiruvananthapuram.
The successful candidates included, 625 male and 166 female candidates.
The number of vacancy reported by the government for IAS is 120 while the vacancy for Indian Foreign Service is 26. There 130 posts for Indian Police Service while there are 546 posts in Central Service Group-A.

UPSC has set up facilitation counter near examination hall in its campus. Candidates can obtain further information or clarification regarding their examination or recruitment from the UPSC office.
