In the year 2024-25, Jammu Airport has seen a significant surge in air traffic, with a total of 1.61 million passengers travelling through the airport. The sky is indeed the limit — and for Jammu, the journey has just begun. In a response to a query raised by MP Jugal Kishore in the Lok Sabha, the Minister of State for civil aviation said that airline operators have connected Jammu to several major cities, including Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Delhi, Hyderabad, Chandigarh, Srinagar, and Leh. These routes saw a total of 188 weekly aircraft movements, which include both arrivals and departures. The increase in air travel has been a major boost for both local and tourist traffic, enhancing Jammu’s connectivity to various parts of the country. Air connectivity is more than just a convenience; it is a catalyst for growth. Jammu’s enhanced links with commercial and cultural hubs across the country are set to boost the trade, improve access to services, and open up new opportunities in sectors like tourism and hospitality. This surge in air traffic is set to provide a much-needed push to the region’s economy, especially at a time when Jammu is striving to establish itself as a centre of development alongside its strategic and religious significance. The increasing footfall at Jammu Airport can also be attributed to the region’s enduring appeal as a tourist destination. From Vaishno Devi pilgrims to leisure and adventure travellers heading towards Patnitop the influx of visitors has contributed significantly to local employment and enterprise. Moreover, improved accessibility reduces the travel time and enhances comfort for both residents and tourists, which ultimately feeds into the region’s image as a reliable and safe destination. However, the rise in passenger traffic also brings with it the responsibility to improve airport infrastructure and passenger amenities. As the demand grows, the need for expanded terminal capacity, enhanced security systems, modern baggage handling, and improved connectivity with city centres becomes more pressing. The government and airport authorities must proactively plan and invest in infrastructure upgrades to meet future demand without compromising service quality. The integration of Jammu Airport with a broader air network has positioned the region as a gateway for both tourism and commerce in North India. The numbers speak for themselves — the surge in air traffic at Jammu Airport is a welcome sign of optimism and progress. With the right policy support, infrastructural investments, and stakeholder coordination, Jammu can emerge not only as a transportation hub but also as a beacon of balanced regional development. |
