Divided House | | | The much hyped Congress Party’s campaign to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir has been marred by factionalism yet again. The chain hunger strike of the party in Srinagar and Jammu was not attended by prominent leaders of the party reflecting the deepening rift within the ranks. The infighting was also evident during the party’s “Delhi Chalo” campaign and the subsequent “Parliament Gherao” protest on July 22. Senior J&K Congress leaders had travelled to New Delhi to participate, but a section of leaders chose to stay away, reportedly due to the presence of their intra-party rivals. The optics were disastrous. A campaign demanding the restoration of statehood —showcased a divided house, where personal rivalries trump collective goals. The growing disconnect within the party indicates that all is not well and the JKPCC leaders are treading different paths. Internal rivalries are not only damaging the party’s image but also weakening its ability to mobilise around substantive political issues. The Congress’s inability to present a united front undermines both its credibility and its relevance. The senior party leaders have already sounded the alarm, warning members against groupism and indiscipline. They have been reiterating that there is no place for factionalism in the party. It is both a directive and an indictment — a recognition that internal divisions are eroding the party’s organisational strength. The high command’s disapproval of discord within the party ranks seems to be hardly making any difference. Leaders are not paying any heed, its evident. The Congress cannot afford this infighting. In a region where the political landscape has shifted dramatically since the abrogation of Article 370, parties that speak with a clear, unified voice have the best chance of connecting with voters. If the Congress truly wishes to lead that conversation, it must first resolve the conversation within its own ranks. Unity is not an optional virtue here — it is the bare minimum requirement for political survival. Without it, the party risks turning its statehood campaign into yet another casualty of its own factional warfare. This was a time for unity. However, individual interests have derailed what should have been a strong, united message on statehood. The disunity is directly undermining outreach efforts of the Congress Party which some people are terming as theatrics. |
