Give people democratic space : Mufti
5/4/2009 11:35:38 PM
Early Times Report
Srinagar, May 04 – Expressing serious concern over the reports of use of oppressive tactics against a large chunk of population in the Srinagar city, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has said “The strong-arm tactics adopted by the State administration against the youth in Srinagar, through arrests and intimidation, is only going to vitiate the atmosphere further,”.
Addressing a public meeting at Mujgund in Batamalloo assembly segment of Srinagar parliamentary constituency today, Sayeed said the State administration must honor the commitment on freedom of expression and liberty. He said the use of excessive force by State machinery in any situation against the masses is bound to prove harmful and it seems that administration is not serious enough to address the already deepened alienation.
The PDP Patron observed that if immediate corrective measures are not taken and sufficient democratic space is not provided to all sections of the society, the present atmosphere of anger might get intensified further leading to fresh wave of alienation. He said imposing restrictions on Friday congregations in the historic Jamia Masjid of Srinagar and other local mosques is against the civilized and democratic conduct.
Stating that the democratic system survives on the temperament of freedom and people friendly mindset, Sayeed said that people's confidence in the rule of law is weakening day by day and the democratic institutions are loosing relevance in the face of mishandling of the situation by the State Government. “The State administration should look into the causes of the brewing unrest among the people instead of going all out to crush it with full might,” he said.
Sayeed said the youth are losing faith in fair play and their suffocation is bound to throw them in dungeon of disgust which only causes repulsion as is seen on the streets every now and then. "We advise the State Government not to choke the future space of the State’s youth and immediately come out with a positive approach to provide them a breather and future hope instead of putting them behind the bars," he said.
PDP candidate for Srinagar parliamentary constituency Moulvi Iftikhar Hussain Ansari and senior PDP leader Tariq Hameed Karra also addressed the meeting.
