Doda, Kishtwar region to have addition 30 SRTC buses

Jammu, May 5- On the instructions of the Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, following the road accident in Kishtwar in which 30 people were killed and five injured yesterday, the Regional Transport Officer (RTO), Jammu has rushed to Kishtwar for strengthening the passenger transport and assess the additional requirement of the passenger vehicles for ferrying the people in the mountainous erstwhile Doda district. The additional passenger vehicles will be deployed on those routes where demand is comparatively high.
In the wake of recent spate in road accidents on different routes of the erstwhile Doda district, the Government has constituted a committee comprising concerned District Development Commissioners, Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs), SSP Traffic and RTO, Jammu which would work out a plan for deployment of additional vehicles on different routes and issuance of on-the-spot route permits on need basis. The committee will also look at the measures for checking overloading by passenger vehicles plying in the area.
It may be recalled that the Chief Minister had earlier announced that a fleet of 30 SRTC buses will be deployed for plying in the erstwhile Doda district.
According to Divisional Commissioner, Jammu, Dr. Pawan Kotwal, Rs two crore have already been provided to the Transport Department. Besides, an additional amount of Rs. one crore is being provided to the said Department for procuring the new passenger buses for the purpose. A purchase committee has also been constituted for speeding up the procedure of procurement so that the new fleet is commissioned at the earliest. “The deployment of additional fleet of SRTC buses in Doda, Kishtwar and Ramban will provide necessary succor to the people of the area,” he said and added that it has been experienced in the past that the SRTC buses have a good track record while plying in the mountainous terrain of erstwhile Doda district and have met with no major road accident.
The Divisional Commissioner said that the injured in yesterday mishap and admitted in Government Medical College Hospital, Jammu and those in District Hospital, Kishtwar are being looked after properly and being provided specialized medical treatment to ensure their speedy recovery.
