| Electrification of all leftover villages of Ladakh by 2010: Jora | | | Leh, September. 22, 2006 The state government of Jammu & Kashmir would take every possible step to improve the power situation in Ladakh region. The remaining 62 un-electrified villages of the region would be electrified under the centrally sponsored scheme of Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidvutikaran Yojna by 2010.This was stated by Sh.. Nawang Rigzin Jora, Minister of Power, J&K while addressing the gathering on the second day of the five-day long Central Government’s Bharat Nirman Programme in collaboration with other units of the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting at the Polo Ground, today. Elaborating further Sh. Jora said that there are 240 inhabited villages in the region and out of which 178 have been electrified so far . He said that though the power situation in the region was not satisfactory yet almost all the villages have been provided power supply either through Diesel Generator sets or solar power system However the Minister admitted that the proper power supply was yet to be provided in some of the villages The Minister said that at present the demand for power in Ladakh region is 58.54 MW whereas only 16.19 MW is available out of which 8.39 MW is through Diesel based power and 7.80 MW is through Hydro Power. Sh.Jora said that Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidvutikaran Yojana stands submitted to Rural Electrification Corporation of India for electrification of sixty two un-electrified villages of Ladakh region at a cost of Rs.66.93 lacks. Under this scheme 35 villages in Leh district would be electrified at a cost of Rs. 39 crores. This is pertinent to mention here that the Power Ministry at the Central Government introduced RGGVY in April, 2005, which aims at providing electricity in all left over villages and habitations in five years and access to electricity to all rural households. This programme has been brought under the ambit of Bharat Nirman. Sh. Jora also disclosed that Nimoo Bazgo (Alchi) Project is schedule to be commissioned by November 2010 with an estimated cost of Rs.611.01 Crores. The project would also provide a firm Power of 14 MW in winter months. The infrastructure works of the project are complete and the main works of the project will commence in October 2006. He said that two power projects including Rs.13 crore Hanu Project for Leh District and Rs. Seven Crore Dumkhal Project of 3 MW and 500 KVA respectively have been taken up after he assumed the portfolio of Power Ministry. Highlighting the flagship programmes of the Central Govt. including Pradhan Mantri Grameen Sadak Yojna, National Rural Health Mission, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, Mid-day Meal Scheme etc., Sh. Jora called upon the residents of Ladakh region to come forward in big numbers to get benefited from these schemes/programmes through this Bharat Nirman Campaign. Sh. Asghar Ali, Superintending Engineers, Power Development Corporation and Sh. Amresh Kumar, Chief Engineer, National Hydroelectric Power Corporation also addressed the public and threw light on various power projects under implementation in Ladakh region. Earlier, Sh. Rajesh Chander Bali of PIB welcomed the chief guest and other dignitaries at the campaign and honoured Sh. Jora and others including Deputy Commissioner Sh. M.K. Dwivedi and SSP, Sh.
