| With NC cuddled in Delhi’s lap, PDP now lone regional voice: Mehbooba | | | Early Times Report Kupwara, May 05- Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti has said with the National Conference having cuddled itself in Delhi’s lap, PDP is now the only voice left in the State to represent its regional aspirations. Addressing public meetings in Handwara assembly segment of the Baramulla parliamentary constituency today, Mehbooba said it is because of its pro-people agenda that PDP has been witnessing a consistent and formidable growth across the State since its inception in 1999. She said while in Anantnag parliamentary constituency PDP’s vote share went up from 24.55% in 1999 Lok Sabha polls to 49.55% in 2004, in Srinagar parliamentary constituency it shot up from 19.26% in 1999 to 38.46% in 2004. Similarly in Baramulla parliamentary constituency the party’s vote share went up from 25.10% in 1999 to 35.18% in 2004, she said and added that on the contrary the vote share of the National Conference has steadily gone down during this period, reflecting the people’s increasing disillusionment with this party. “Insha Allah (God willing) with the support of our people, PDP’s performance would touch new heights in the ongoing parliamentary polls,” she said. Asserting that power was not an issue for PDP, Mehbooba said the very foundation of the party is based on the principle that the Kashmir problem should have a dignified solution not only with the endorsement of India and Pakistan but also in accordance with the wishes of the State's people. "We have been pursuing this agenda with consistency and determination, whether in or outside the Government,” she said. She said Jammu & Kashmir can’t remain aloof from the massive economic progress taking place in the country and the region and the enterprising younger generation of the State has to be provided a more congenial atmosphere to flourish and assimilate into the free global market economy. “PDP strongly believes that nothing is valid and should be happening for Jammu and Kashmir except with the active involvement of its people,” she said and added that the party would carry the voice of Jammu and Kashmir to all parts of the country and use all forums including the Assembly, Parliament and other democratic platforms to secure the political and economic rights of the State and its people. PDP leader Ghulam Mohammad Mir also addressed the meeting.
