Masking and tampering of registration number plates | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Aug 21: Whereas it has been found that a large number of vehicles are plying in District Jammu with masked or tampered registration number plates which is a serious violation of M.V. Act as well as an offence under BNS. Whereas it has been noticed that the primary reason for the people to engage in such behavior is to evade detection of visible traffic violations captured by surveillance cameras installed at various locations or by the challaning authorities deployed at different points. Whereas the methods used for hiding/tampering with number plates may include, but not limited to, covering the number plates with hands, bags, face masks, stickers, tapes, mud or dirt etc., altering or concealing the digits or alphabets using tapes, stickers, markers etc., folding or bending number plates to make them unreadable to camera, using fake numbers or removing number plates. Whereas such techniques of masking or tampering with number plates can be used to their advantage by criminals committing more serious crimes like abduction, chain snatching, hit and run, theft, robbery etc. and even by anti-national elements to commit terrorist acts. Whereas such type of violations are covered U/S 39/192 of MV Act which are punishable with a fine up to Rs. 5000 for first time violators and Rs. 10000 for subsequent ones. Besides, provisions of BNS relating to forgery and cheating are also attracted. Whereas the general public is informed by virtue of this Public Notice to do away with all such kinds of masking or tamperings within 3 days of issuance of this notice failing which strict legal action shall be taken against the violators which shall not only be limited to action under MV Act but may also lead to registration of FIRs under BNS. |
