Early Times Report
Jammu, May 5- The reports mourning the death of innocent persons in tragic bus accident in Kishtwar district yesterday continue to pour in. The reports suggest formulation of a comprehensive traffic management policy in the state especially in the hilly areas besides fixing responsibility against the erring officials.
While expressing deep shock over the tragic accident, Balraj Puri, Convenor PUCL J&K State, has held the successive government responsible for their criminal negligence for the condition of roads in the area and of its traffic instead of learning a lesson from the past lapses, he said, the present regime could not do anything to prevent recurrent accidents on this road as death toll due to them since January this year has touched 83.
He demanded thorough enquiry into causes of all accidents and exemplary punishment to whosoever may be guilty. Meanwhile adequate compensation should be paid to the bereaved families, Puri suggested.
BJP leader and candidate from Jammu-Poonch Parliamentary Constituency Lila Karan Sharma, while expressing his shock and sorrow over yesterday’s accident near Kishtwar which caused death of 31 people and seriously injured about half a dozen, said that such accidents have become routine in the hilly areas of Doda, Kishtwar and Bhaderwah. He said every time, when such accidents occur, government officials claim of taking effective measures to ensure non occurrences in future but all in vain. It is only lip service. No one cares for the precious lives of the people traveling in overloaded and defective vehicles. The Traffic department, which has to see the proper management of traffic, has totally failed to do justice towards its responsibility. The cops in blues are seen on roads but they are more concerned in minting money from the erring drivers and thus compromise on the safety of the passengers.
Lila Karan Sharma questioned as to why no responsibility is fixed for such accidents on any one? He said the government should not sit as a mute spectator and frame a clear cut policy for proper traffic management in hilly areas. He also asked for stern action against the officials of traffic department and RTO office. He demanded at least one job to member of each family affected by the accident.
The BJP leader expressed his heart felt sympathies with the members of the bereaved families and prayed God to give them strength to bear the loss caused by the untimely deaths.
