ITBP ONE OF THE ELITE FORCES IN THE WORLD: DORJE

Leh, September 22,2006.
Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) is not only one of the oldest police forces in the country but one of the elite forces in the world. This was stated by Chief Executive Councilor, Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Sh.T.Dorje after inspecting the ITBP Stall which is one of the 45 stalls put up by various State and Central government departments including Army, Police, CRPF and NGOs at Polo Ground. These stalls have been put up as part of five day long Public Information Campaign launched by Press Information Bureau, Government of India, under Bharat Niram Programme in collaboration with various other media units of Information and Broadcasting Ministry viz Directorate of Field Publicity, Directorate of Advertising and Visual Publicity, Song and Drama Division, All India Radio and Doordarshan.
Sh.Dorje was informed by the Deputy Commandant, ITBP Sh. Randhir Singh that ITBP was originally conceived in 1962 immediately after Sino Indian border conflict as an integrated guerilla cum fighting force, completely self contained with its supplies, communication and intelligence units. Today the force is performing multifarious duties but major chunk of the Force is deployed along the entire stretch of Indo-China border covering 3488 km from Karakoram Pass (LADAKH) to Dhipula in Arunachal Pradesh. Apart from battling terrorism and guarding borders, the Force is now also engaged in UN Peace keeping operations in Congo and Kosovo.
In Congo, ITBP has sent special Police Unit consisting of more than 100 Police personnel. Besides, this its commandoes are deployed in Afghanistan to give security cover to Border Road Organisation(BRO) personnel for Zaranj Project on Iran Afghanistan Border. ITBP is also providing security cover to the Indian Embassy in Kabul and the Consulate General in Jalalabad.
The Chief Executive Councilor, Sh. Dorje was informed by Deputy Commandant, Sh.Randhir Singh that the Force was deployed in South Kashmir from 1989 to 2003 for combating insurgency. The achievements of the Force have been recognized and ITBP personnel have been decorated with with Shaurya Chakra, Sena Medal, Padamshree, President’s Police Medal for Gallantry,PM’s Life saving awards, National Adventure awards and many more decorations. He said that ITBP has unique distinction in Adventure Sports. The Force has scaled world’s highest mountain Mount Everest thrice and climbed more than 100 peaks in Himalayan ranges, Mt.Fujiyama in Japan, Acanagua in Argentina and other peaks in the Alps.
