Thunder showers cool Jammu by 9’C

Pleasant weather, cloudy sky and cool breeze- it was a perfect day for the city residents who enjoyed the welcome change after last week’s hot and sweltering days.
The temperature too, showed signs of improvement with the city recording a minimum temperature of 19.0 degree Celsius and a maximum of 32.2 degree Celsius. Severe heat wave conditions which developed over Jammu region from the last 10 to 15 days have now started diminishing as the overnight thunder showers brought much needed relief to the people from scorching heat waves. From the last two days, the temperature started falling down drastically due to overnight showers and windy stormy conditions. As per reports, the upper reaches of the valley including Gulmarg and Harwan hills received fresh spell of snow bringing down the mercury. The upper reaches of valley including Gulmarg ski resort and Harwan hills in Srinagar received fresh spell of snow on early Tuesday morning. At many places en route the Amarnath cave, particularly Sheshnag, Pissu Top, Panjtarni and Mahaguns light snowfall was witnessed. Reports of fresh snowfall were also received from many places of the Srinagar-Leh highway at Zojila pass, Gumri and Sonamarg. Meanwhile Jammu and other districts of the region were lashed by over night rains which brought cheer to city residents. Unlike two days back before residents were forced to stay indoors now seemed to be out and enjoying the weather in the city of temples. People were affected due to heat waves across the region and were preferring to stay indoors. School going Tiny Tots and college students were worst sufferers of heat wave as they faced the brunt of heat waves in peak hours. Govt. was forced to change the school times from 8 AM – 2 PM to 7.30AM- 1.30 PM.
A large number of schools in the region lack basic facilities and as such parents did not allow their wards to attend their school. According to Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) maximum temperature has risen by two degrees Celsius during this period with compare to last year and prediction is that temperature may rise further in days to come over Jammu region after a brief respite.
Talking to early times Dr. Mahinder of SKAUST (Sher-e-Kashmir agricultural university of science and technology) said that the temperature will rise again from 7th May and will touch 40-42 degree Celsius in the coming week. He further said that the sky will get clear afternoon tomorrow and the mercury will start rising day by day and added that this year the temperature will remain 3 degree above the normal temperature. He also predicted thunder rains in the evenings or during the night hours but from tomorrow afternoon, Jammu may again face heat waves.
Nishant Kumar, computer professional talking to ET correspondent said that the overnight rains has brought much needed relief to the people as they were facing tough time due to heat waves. He further added that the pleasant weather and cool breeze has made Jammuities happy.
Prof. A.K. Sadhu, former head economics department university of Jammu said that Coffee shops, restaurants, cinema halls did brisk business and added that the young, the old, school kids, office goers and practically everybody “relished” the weather’ which provided a pleasant change.
