| Chandan to lecture on high altitude wetland | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, May 06- The Friends of Ladakh Society, University of Jammu in collaboration with Vijay Suri Foundation is organizing an extension lecture on the theme "Conservation and Management of Himalayan High Altitude Wetlands with a Focus on Black-necked Crane" by Pankaj Chandan, Project Manager Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) India on Thursday at the Seminar Hall of DSRS, Social Sciences Block, University of Jammu.
"Friends of Ladakh" is a group of people who share common interests about Ladakh.Centre for History and Culture of Jammu and Ladakh Regions, University of Jammu is the nodal agency for this group.
Chandan, a well known conservationist who is based in Leh, Ladakh has worked extensively on the Himalayan high altitude wetlands which are one of the most unique ecosystems in the world. He has been managing WWF-India's High Altitude Wetland Conservation project in the states of J&K, Himachal Pradesh, Uttrakhand, Sikkim and Arunachal. A widely traveled researcher who has represented India at many international conferences, Chandan is also responsible for the implementation of a regional project on Black-necked Crane in India, China and Bhutan.
The Himalayan high altitude wetlands of J&K not only support the unique biodiversity in the region but are also source of livelihood for the local communities. At the regional level these wetlands also act as source of major rivers originating from the regions and supports billions and Billions of people in the downstream regions.
The presentation by Pankaj Chandan will focus on these high altitude wetlands in general and wetlands in Ladakh in particular. The presentation will also give an overview of Black-necked Crane which is a state bird of Jammu & Kashmir and uses these high altitude wetlands as its breeding ground. WWF is working on the conservation of these wetlands from over a decade and thus the presentation will also give an overview of this conservation initiative in the Himalayan region.
The lecture will greatly benefit the students and researchers community of the University of Jammu especially the students from the School of Life Sciences, Environmental sciences; members of the civil society and other who might be interested in the theme.
