| Finally 78 trucks cross sides, but 33 returned | | CS chair meet to clear hurdles | | Early Times Report
Jammu, May 6: Even as 82 trucks changed sides at the Line of Control on Srinagar-Muzaffarabad route, the Chief Secretary SS Kapur today chaired a high level meeting to discuss and address the difficulties in trans-border trade between two parts of Jammu and Kashmir. As there was no trade on two consecutive weeks –earlier due to strike of traders and this week due to halting of trucks on account of violation of standing operations procedures –the Early Times had reported in today’s issue that the Chief Secretary had summoned a meeting to clear the hurdles. Reports said as many as 82 trucks laden with various crossed Kaman post on Line of Control in Uri town of North Kashmir’s Barammula district on Wednesday to mark the resumption of trade. Sources said that 38 truck loads crossed over to Pakistan occupied Kashmir while 44 trucks carrying various item mainly Garlic reached this side of LoC. However, they said, only eleven of the 44 trucks could be unloaded while the remaining 33 were sent back. The 38 truck loads which went to PoK carried coconut 199.49 quintal, Rajma 20.88 quintal, Mango 77.88 quintal, pomegranate 6.40 quintal, Banana 96.99 quintal, Onion 980.34 quintal, lemon 185.45 quintal, pine apple 19.73 quintal, Kiwi-fruit 14 kilograms, walnut kernels 5.60 quintal, Mosami (special orange) 6 kilograms, embroidered suits 17 pieces, Honey 1.60 quintal, grapes 4.25 quintal and 500 pieces of paper-Machie. The items which reached Srinagar from PoK included 571.85 quintal of garlic, Moong 87.50 quintal, dry- dates 1.26 quintal, 8 pieces of special cloth from Nimaz (prayer rugs), 5 rolls of carpets and a box of Pashawari sandals. Meanwhile, chairing a high-level officers’ meeting at Srinagar today to review various aspects of the cross-LoC trade, the Chief Secretary said the Union Ministry of Commerce has already released Rs. 2 crore for developing adequate infrastructure at the Trading Facilitation Centres (TFCs) at Salamabad, in Baramulla district and Chakkan-da-Bagh, in Poonch district. The meeting was attended by Financial Commissioner, Home, Mr. Verghese Samuel, Principal Secretary, Industries and Commerce, Mr. Anil Goswami, Director General Police, Mr. Kuldeep Khoda, Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, Mr. Masaud Samoon, Director General Police, CID, Mr. Ashok Bhan, IGP Kashmir Dr. B. Srinivas, SSP, Baramulla, Mr. Viplav Kumar, Deputy Commissioners of Baramulla and Poonch, Mr. Latif-u-Zaman Deva, and Mr. Mohammad Afzal Bhat, besides senior officers from the Central Government. The meeting discussed threadbare various issues necessary for making the cross-LoC trade a success. It was told that the outward movement of vehicles must report at both the TFCs a day in advance by 11.30 a. m. to facilitate Custodian authorities to unload and reload cargo before the time fixed for departure. Keeping in view the handling capacity at TFC Salamabad, it was also discussed that 50 truckloads a day would be allowed at the trading centre for further departure to the other side and the timing at Kaman Post and Chakan-da-bagh would be extended from 9 a. m. to 1 p. m. against the present timing of 9 a. m. to 11 a. m. The drivers are required to be present at the TFC one day in advance and the credentials of these drivers would be forwarded to the security agencies for verification.
