| Bharat Nirman : PM finds fault with non-Congress states | | | New Delhi, Sep 23 Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today lauded the Congress-ruled states for the effective implementation of the UPA government’s flagship programme of 'Bharat Nirman', while finding fault with many non-Congress states in the backlog of works in rural electrification and rural drinking water . Addressing the Chief Ministers of 14 Congress-ruled states at a Conclave here, he asked them to ensure that their states were fully electrified and villages connected by roads by 2009, besides achieving all other goals set under the Bharat Nirman programme. ''This can have tremendous benefits for agriculture in particular and the rural economy as a whole.'' Dr Singh said he had recently reviewed the progress of the multi-crore programme and it was found that Asom was the only party-ruled state that figured among the states with maximum backlog for coverage under the programme. ''Our reviews show that Bharat Nirman is progressing well in most Congress-ruled states,'' he said, while highlighting that non-Congress states such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal and Rajasthan have had maximum backlog. He, however, expressed dissatisfaction over the performance of party-ruled states of Asom and Maharashtra in the area of rural drinking water, and Asom in the area of rural electrification. In this context, he asked the party leadership to communicate to the public at large, especially in the non-Congress ruled states, that rural infrastructure was being provided through Bharat Nirman on a war footing. ''Bharat Nirman is the initiative of the Congress Party and we must project it as such,'' he said. |
