| Elated Ansari says people boycotted ‘Govt imposed’ poll boycott in Srinagar | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, May 07- Asserting that the ongoing general elections will finally close the chapter of National Conference from the political spectrum of the state, senior Peoples Democratic Party leader and candidate for Srinagar constituency Molvi Iftikar Hussain Ansari has expressed gratitude to the voters for exercising their franchise despite the intimidation and harassment by the coalition government by using the government machinery. In a statement, here today, Anasari said that the National Conference stands defeated even before the announcement of the results and people foiled the nefarious designs of the coalition to ensure complete boycott in the city of Srinagar, which went for polling today. “I express my personnel gratitude to the voters of the constituency who faced all odds and humiliation at the hands of government functionaries, particularly police, to exercise their franchise”, the statement said. He said that Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has moved an important step ahead in finally putting an end to monopoly of NC on the political scenario of the state. “The party which exploited Srinagar for the last eight decades, sentimentally and emotionally, was shown the door by the people in the last assembly elections and this time the chapter of the party will be over for once and all from the political horizon of the state”, he said. Accusing the coalition government of using government machinery during the polling, Ansari said that people came to vote despite intimidation and harassment by the administration, particularly by the police. “It is now an open secret that the government, with the help of hired goons and police, did not left any stone unturned to ensure complete boycott in the city areas”, he said adding, “The National Conference workers and hired mobile voters created a reign of terror at many place”. “Our workers were harassed and beaten up by the police at various places but the party cadre rose to the occasion and tried to frustrate the designs of the ruling party and the government”. NC minister Ali Muhammad Sagar and his son, the statement said, tried to capture polling booths in full public view at various places and ironically police facilitated the attempts of the NC leaders. “Police at several places helped the NC goons to harass the PDP workers and voters and at some places police played role of mute spectator when the ruling party leaders were attempting to take over the polling stations”, he added. The PDP leader said that complaints have been lodged before the Election Commission of India on various accounts and “we are sure that the EC will rise to the occasion and act upon the complaints in the interest of people and democracy”.
