Jammu, May 7: Jammu Police though deserve its share of appreciations for its 40 per cent success in ensuring that you find your loved car in garage when you wake up in morning or in the parking lot when you are back from shopping.
149 Police reports of vehicle thefts have been registered in different police stations in Jammu district since January 1, 2009. This speaks volumes of vehicle thefts in the district though police recovered 60 vehicles from the vehicle lifters during this time .According to police record vehicles valuing Rs 1.39 crores had been stolen in last four months in different parts of city. The value of vehicles recovered during this period amounts to Rs 50.48 lakhs.
With major organized crime rungs smashed over a decade back, thefts is the major area that Jammu Police is now after. There are complaints of movable property thefts amounting to Rs 73.79 lakhs over the four months. The Police have been able to recover and handover to their owners goods worth Rs 21.46 lakhs.
The cumulative value of all theft cases since January this year is pegged at over Rs 2 Crores. It is believed that once something is stolen is gone forever but, so far, the Jammu Police have made recovers of around 40 per cent of total thefts of vehicles and other immovable properties. Jammu SSP Manohar Singh says that first onus is with the owners in ensuring safety of their belongings and plugging in the vulnerable holes.
Calculating the percentage of recoveries of stolen vehicle it goes to 40% and recoveries of property go to 29%. Most of the stolen two wheelers were recovered in Jammu districts where as four wheelers were recovered from Srinagar. Vehicle lifters in order to splash mud in the eyes of the masses and police temper Registration Certificates of two vehicles and prepare fake Registration Certificates for four vehicles, the modus operandi of the vehicle lifters was known by police on the revelation of arrested vehicle lifters. According to SSP Jammu Manohar Singh the thefts take due to unawareness among the masses. Supporting his arguments he said that motorcycles having lose handle lock give space to the vehicle lifters to break the lock easily, similarly people do not park their vehicles in the parking lots in order to save parking charges and parked vehicles at roads resulting invitation to the vehicle lifters. He said that there are numerous example of the house theft made by their servants, police came to know only when owner lodged report that their servants were disappear after theft. It is the duty and responsibility of us to register the name of servants and tenants with the concerned police station by filing form number 12 so that police can identify and locate them easily. Giving information about the modus operandi of the thieves he said that motorcycle lifters use master key and other instruments to broke open the locks which can be prevented by installing central locking system and siren when touch system to the vehicles. He said that police can work only with people’s cooperation and if we adhere with the precautions the cases of thefts will automatically level down.
