Public Intoxication Offenders sentenced to community service under section 355 BNS

Jammu, Sept 9: In a landmark decision under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Jammu Police, Police Station Jhajjar Kotli, secured the conviction of two individuals for public intoxication and disorderly conduct. The Hon’ble Court delivered its verdict on 08-09-2025, marking a progressive step toward reformative justice.The convicted individuals are:
1.Shoket Ali S/o Abdul Rashid.
2.Ramzan Mohd S/o Kyshi Mohd.
Both residents of Kun Daroorian, Tehsil Katra, District Reasi.
The Hon’ble Court sentenced both accused to two days of community service at PHC Dansal from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. during which they are required to mark their attendance and perform community cleaning work.
The incident occurred on 07-09-2025 within the jurisdiction of Police Station Jhajjar Kotli, where the accused were found in an intoxicated state and causing public disturbance. They were arrested on the spot,medically examined, and subsequently produced before the Learned Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMIC), Jammu.
In a noteworthy departure from conventional punitive measures,the Hon’ble Court,exercising its discretion under Section 355 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita,opted for a reformative sentence.
