Several functions mark World Red Cross Day

Jammu, May 08- Several functions marked the observance of World Red Cross Day across Jammu region.
To pay floral tributes to the founder of Red Cross Movement “Sir Jean Henry Dunant” on the World Red Cross Day being observed world over, a symbolic function was organized today in Red Cross office, Kachi Chowni, Jammu wherein various activist of Red Cross, Life Members and Volunteers gathered and remembered the great man who sacrificed his life humanitarian cause. District Development Commissioner-cum-Chairman, District Red Cross Society, Jammu, Dr Mandeep K Bhandari, Committee Members R Vijay Magotra, R C Gupta, Mahesh Gupta and other dignitaries garlanded the portrait of the Henry Dunant and thereafter hoisted Red Cross Flag.
Red Cross prayer “Dharti Nirmal Haro Peera Prabhu Hai” was read out by the chief guest and all other members present. Executive Secretary, Dinesh Gupta of the branch gave a brief of activities carried out recently and planned for the future also.
Dr Bhandari thanked one and all for their dedication and devotion for the humanitarian cause and assured for all kind of support from the administration in minimizing the sufferings of human beings. He said that he wants every poor needy be helped by the Red Cross in whatever manner possible and same way members of public who wishes to associate for noble cause can contact him or the Red Cross office. He also visited the Red Cross office and interacted with the staff and had first hand information about the overall functioning, space available and kind of activities being carried-out from the complex
In its efforts to prevent and alleviate human suffering the District Red Cross Society, Udhampur organized a mass rally to observe the International Red Cross Day. The District Development Commissioner, Ajay Khajuria formally flagged off the rally from Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Udhampur.
In the rally as many as 300 children drawn from various government and private educational institutions of the Udhampur town participated. The students carrying placards in their hands like “Who provide assistance in disasters, None other than my dear, Red Cross – Red Cross,” “Help needy to donating money to Red Cross Society,” “Red Cross for people displaced by war,” “Help the needy always” etc. in a gesture of promoting brotherhood among people of different caste, colour, creed and nationality, after passing through main locations of the Udhampur town, finally converged at Deputy Commissioner Office complex.
Addressing the students on the occasion, the DDC said that ‘we have a collective responsibility to make our world a better place and added that we must strive sincerely to make a move and do some thing to help others’.
Khajuria called upon the students to come forward and spread the good values in the society for the promotion of health and social welfare. “We must empower communities to protect themselves from the preventable loss of life and livelihoods. We must continue to foster a spirit of volunteerism at a local level in order to remain close to those impacted and to better understand and respond to their needs,” the DDC commented.
Later, the DDC also distributed certificates of merit among the students for their participation in painting and symposium organized by the Red Cross Society.

Like other parts of the world “World Red Cross Day” was observed at Girls Higher Secondary School, Leh today.
Red Cross Day was celebrated for the first time throughout the world on May 8, 1948, the anniversary of the birth of Henry Dunant, the founder of the Red Cross. It subsequently changed names several times and in 1984 became ‘World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day.
The Wild Life Warden & Conservator Forest Mr. Jigmet Takpa was the chief guest on the occasion, other who present on the occasion were Chief Medical Officer Dr. Dolma, Chief Education Officer, Leh Mr. Abdul Rahuf, District Education and Planning Officer, Leh, Mrs. Angmo, Zonal Education Officer, Leh Mr. Sonam Wangchuk, Principal of Govt. Girls Higher Secondary School, Mrs. Tsering Dolma, Principal Govt. Boys Higher Secondary School, Leh, Lecturers and large number of students.
On this occasion the students of various schools took part in a debate competition on the topic “Climate Change and its humanitarian consequence serving as a solferino of today” with zeal.
Jigmet Takpa, with the help of Slide Show explained the students about the change in climate with the context of Ladakh. He said the climate of Ladakh has changed drastically as compared to the past. He said that, it is a clear indication that the climate of Ladakh is changing as Ladakh experiences early summer as well as warmer winter year by year. He said that as a result of fast melting Glacier, the water level of Pangong, Tsomoreri, Tsokar lakes has seen rising at a fast rate and some species of migratory birds which earlier used to migrate from Ladakh before the on set of winter, now they have seen making Ladkh as their permanent home.
Earlier, Mr. Abdul Rahuf, Chief Education Officer, Leh welcomed the guest and gave brief introduction about the Red Cross and its aim and objectives. Principal Govt. Boys Higher Secondary School and Principal Girls Higher Secondary School also spoke on the occasion.
In the end, Mr. Takpa distributed prizes to the wining students.
