| Police reforms process completed: Bharadwaj | | | New Delhi, Sept 23 A day after the Supreme Court directed the Central and state governments to bring about police reforms in the country, Union Law Minister H R Bharadwaj today said the Centre had already completed the process in this regard to provide insulation to police from political and other external influences. "We are happy that the Supreme Court had yesterday directed the governmments to initiate the reforms. But actually, we have ourselves completed the process of reforms to ensure that police are free of any interference," the Minister told a press conference on the sidelines of a national workshop on Plea Bargaining, organised by International Centre for Alternative Dispute Resolution (ICADR).
The Minister said the Centre would shortly convene a high-level meeting of representatives of all states and Union Territories to put into effect necessary police reforms and make it free from corruption and outside interference.
On Friday, a Supreme Court Bench headed by Chief Justice Y K Sabharwal had ordered a slew of measures be taken by the Centre and states to eliminate political and other extraneous influences on police.
The court had passed the order on a PIL filed by former BSF Director General Prakash Singh and asked the Centre and the State governments to comply with the directives before December 31, 2006 as an interim measure till it decided the issue.
Bharadwaj said the government was determined to provide Director Generals of Police (DGPs) and other senior police officials minimum tenure of two years so that they remained free of threats of transfers.
"We are already ensuring a minimum fixed tenure of two years for the CBI Director. The same principle will now be applied to DGPs, IGs and other senior police officials," the Minister said.
Earlier, addressing the workshop on Plea Bargaining, he welcomed the Supreme Court directive and said the Union government was not only keen on ensuring minimum fixed tenure for senior police officers, but also lower level officials in the department. |
