| Budhist Deptt JU celebrates Budh Purnima | | | Early Times Report Jammu May 09 PG Department of Buddhist Studies, University of Jammu today celebrated the Buddha Purnima in the department premises in the University campus. The dept. organized an Inter-departmental elocution competition on the theme: “Buddhism and Peace Process in J&K”. Prof. Veena Gupta, Dean, Faculty of Arts, was the Chief Guest on the occasion and Prof. B. Labh, Head Department of Buddhist Studies presided over the function. Chief guest Prof. Veena Gupta spoke about the basic teachings of the Buddha like the four noble truths, the noble eightfold path (which is essentially the middle path) and the ways and means of their application in the day to day life. The first three prize winners were, namely, Ms. Sapna Sharma, (Biotechnology), Mr. Bhanu Pratap (The Law School) and Ms. Meenakshi Anand (Department of Home Science) respectively. Earlier in the presidential remarks, Prof. Labh highlighted the Buddha’s teachings and their rationality which attracts the modern mind throughout the world. He termed the Buddha as a highly liberated and rational historical personality. Sharing his views about his recently concluded trip to Thailand, he cited the Buddha’s teachings which could make every body smile and kind hearted. Dr. R.N. Singh, Associate professor welcomed the guest whereas Ms. Sonam Spalzin presented the vote of thanks to the guests while Suresh Kumar conducted the proceedings of the function.
