| High plateau sets for intense battle between Leh and Kargil | | | Early Times report Jammu, May 9- It is for the first time in the history of Ladakh that five candidates have taken plunge into parliamentary elections from Ladakh constituency where there is no threat to electoral calculations and subsequent distortion in the outcome. The constituency has no tendency towards boycott, evident from the massive response to ballot in the past elections including the recently concluded assembly polls. Reports said that as for now there is no threat to voter turnout but for the ruling congress candidate, Phuntsog Namgyal as National Conference rebel Ghulam Hassan Khan is pushing hard and may impact the electoral calculations. According to the political pundits Ghulam Hassan Khan, contesting as an independent, has the support of various pockets in the constituency which are likely to vote en masse in his favour. The campaigning in the state’s desert region has gained momentum and what was looking a likely cake walk at the beginning for Congress, is getting tougher. And if observers are to be believed, the fate of Congress now lies on extent to which National Conference-ruling partner- mobilizes its cadre in favour of Phuntsog Namgyal to challenge Khan. Pertinently the Ladakh Union Territory Front has already distanced itself from the United Progressive Alliance and is likely to create an impact on the Congress especially in Nobra, the assembly constituency won by LUTF. Even if there are other three candidates in fray including Ghulam Murtaza of Peoples Democratic Party, Thinless Angmo and Asgar Ali Karbalaie, independents, they are likely to have no impact on the results. The Ladakh constituency is spread over four assembly segments, the polling for which coincides with north Kashmir seat on May 13. In last Lok Sabha elections, an independent supported by Ladakh Hill Development Council, Thupstan Chhewang, defeated Khan, then an NC candidate, by a margin of 25,713 votes in this seat. In 1967 and 1971 midterm polls, the Ladakh Parliamentary seat was represented by Kaushuk Bakula of the Congress. In 1977 elections, the seat was won by Parvati Devi of Congress while as in the midterm 1980 Parliamentary elections the seat was won by P. Namgyal, independent. In 1984, 1989 and 1996 elections, the seat was continuously won by Phunsog Namgyal on INC ticket. In 1998, the seat was won by Syed Hussain of NC while as in 1999 the constituency was represented by Hassan Khan of NC.
