J&K’s health sector marching ahead | | | Recently, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha stated that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi the health sector in Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed massive development. Both government and private healthcare infrastructure have expanded rapidly in the Union Territory during the past five years. Enough steps have been taken to ensure a healthy and prosperous future for every citizen of Jammu Kashmir. One of the landmark initiatives has been the provision of universal health insurance cover for the first time since independence. Under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, every resident of J&K has been assured coverage of up to Rs 5 lakhs. This initiative has broken barriers that long stood between the common citizen and timely, advanced healthcare. Families no longer have to face crippling financial burdens in times of medical emergencies, a development that carries immense social and economic significance. The establishment of medical education institutions further underscores the seriousness of the reforms. Today, Jammu and Kashmir boasts 11 medical colleges, a figure that was unimaginable a few years ago. More importantly, the Union Territory is home to two All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)—with the Jammu AIIMS already functional and the Srinagar AIIMS set to become operational next year. This is more than just an infrastructural milestone; it is a strong step toward ending the exodus of patients to metropolitan cities for advanced treatment. Kashmiris can now look forward to receiving specialized and world-class care within their homeland. Moreover, this strengthening of the healthcare sector has had a multiplier effect on society. Improved health infrastructure has opened new avenues for employment and skill development in the medical and paramedical sectors. The influx of private healthcare providers has not only improved service quality through healthy competition but also contributed to the economy of the Union Territory. The progress achieved cannot be understated. For decades, healthcare was one of the weakest links in Jammu and Kashmir’s developmental chain. Today, it is emerging as a success story, built upon the principles of inclusivity and equity. By aligning with the national vision of “Health for All,” Jammu and Kashmir is moving closer to securing the well-being of its people and empowering them to build a healthier, more productive society. The journey ahead is about consolidating these gains and ensuring that healthcare remains a priority. |
