early times report

Jammu, Sept 23: In a significant stride towards achieving a cleaner and more vibrant India, IGNOU Regional Centre Jammu today announced the successful identification and cleaning of a Cleanliness Target Unit (CTU) located at Rajinder Vihar, Bantalab, Jammu. This initiative falls under the ongoing Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and is part of the larger Swachhata Hi Seva 2025 campaign, which emphasizes citizen participation and the transformation of neglected public spaces into areas of pride.
The Swachhata Hi Seva campaign under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Mission) is a nationwide campaign launched by the Government of India to eliminate open defecation, improve solid waste management, and create a cleaner environment for all citizens.
The targeted CTU, a deserted waste point, was identified by Regional Centre management on 19.09.2025 for its critical need of sanitation and revitalization. The extensive clean-up drive and transformation activities were carried out today which saw enthusiastic participation of Regional Centre staff, community people and Sanitation Workers from JMC.
Prior to the clean-up, the CTU was characterized by garbage dump with a significant accumulation of organic and plastic waste posing environmental risks and garbage borne disease outbreak. Following the comprehensive efforts, the CTU has been transformed into a clean and well-maintained public space, enhancing the dignity and beauty of the area.
The success of this clean-up drive was made possible through the active participation and collective action of local community members, officials and employees of Regional Centre Jammu, students, sanitary workers of Jammu Municipal Corporation under the leadership of Sanitary Inspector Shri Akash Kohli. Dr. Asha Upadhyay, Deputy Director, Dr. Vikram Singh and Dr. Zeba, Assistant Regional Directors, and S. Tejinder Pal Singh, Deputy Registrar from Regional Centre Jammu were among the contributors in the cleanliness drive.
“IGNOU Jammu remains steadfast in its commitment to fostering a culture of cleanliness and sustainability within the Campus, across all its LSCs, and in public spaces; and this successful transformation of the CTU serves as a testament to the power of collaborative effort and citizen participation in achieving the goals of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, turning eyesores into areas of pride for the entire community”, said Dr. Sandeep Gupta, Regional Director, IGNOU Regional Centre Jammu.
