PDP, NC field defeated Assembly candidates for Baramulla LS seat
5/10/2009 11:49:18 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Baramulla, May 10 - The ruling National Conference (NC) and main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have fielded candidates, who were unsuccessful in the 2008 Assembly polls, for the Baramulla Parliamentary seat. The polling in the constituency will be held in the fifth and last phase of elections in Jammu and Kashmir on May 13.
Interestingly, the first timer Sajjad Gani Lone, chairman of the Peoples Conference (PC), founded by his father late Abdul Gani Lone, one of the founder leaders of the Hurriyat Conference (HC), has also joined the fray from the constituency against the stand of all separatist organization not to contest polls.
The other national parties have also put up their candidates though these parties are hardly familiar in the Kashmir valley.
The NC has given mandate to Shariefuddin Shariq, who was unseated from Langate Assembly segment by an Independent candidate Abdul Rashid Sheikh in 2008. Shariq, who had won from the seat in 2002, stood third scoring 14.46 per cent votes polled while PDP nominee got 21.29 per cent votes and was second to Sheikh.
Shariq replaced Abdul Rashid Shaheen who had won from Baramulla Parliamentary constituency in 1999 and again in 2004 when he defeated the PDP candidate Nizam ud-din Bhat by a margin of 9895 votes.
Though the nomination of Shariq by the NC surprised many, but the NC president and former Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah said the party needed Shaheen in the state politics. Shaheen who contested from Pattan Assembly segment in 2008 lost to PDP's Iftikhar Hussain Ansari.
