GDC Thannamandi organizes debate competition, Plantation Drive under Sewa Parv | | | early times report
Thannamandi, Sept 25: Government Degree College (GDC) Thannamandi, under the patronage of Principal Dr. Farooq Ahmed, successfully organized a Debate Competition and a Plantation Drive as part of the ongoing Seva Parv to commemorate Gandhi Jayanti. The Debate Competition, conducted by the Literary Activities Committee in collaboration with the Department of English, was held on the theme “Truth and Non-Violence: Relevance of Gandhian Philosophy in Contemporary Times.” Students from different semesters participated with great enthusiasm, presenting powerful arguments for and against the relevance of Gandhian principles in today’s world. Aqib Mir (3rd Semester) secured the 1st position, Zia ur Rehman (3rd Semester) bagged the 2nd position, while Mehak Fatima (1st Semester) claimed the 3rd position.The event was presided over by Principal Dr. Farooq Ahmed, who lauded the efforts of the organizing committee and praised the students for their insightful perspectives. The panel of judges included Dr. Sheraz Ahmed (HoD Zoology & Staff Secretary), Dr. Gulshan Rashid Bhat (HoD Geography), and Prof. Fatima Parveen (Dept. of Chemistry). Proceedings were conducted by Dr. Meenakshi Sharma (HoD Physics), while Prof. Rumy Dar delivered the vote of thanks. Distinguished dignitaries present included Dr. Naseem Ahmed, Dr. Nazakat Hussain, Dr. Mohd Ashraf, Dr. Yasmeen Kouser, Prof. Rizwana Kousar, Dr. Nagina Kouser, Dr. Shazia Paswal, and Dr. Mohd Ikhlaq. On the same day, the college in collaboration with the Department of Social Forestry organized a Plantation Drive, during which 100 saplings of diverse tree varieties were planted in the college premises. The drive saw active participation from NCC and NSS volunteers who contributed enthusiastically to the plantation activity. Representatives from the Department of Social Forestry appreciated the initiative and assured their support for future green drives. The day concluded with a pledge by the students and volunteers to nurture the saplings and contribute to a greener, cleaner environment—thus honoring Gandhian values of truth, non-violence, and social responsibility.
