Srinagar, May 11-Emphasizing the need for evolving appropriate models of growth and development and forging effective linkages between traditional indigenous knowledge and modern technology to establish a vibrant knowledge based society, the Governor N N Vohra said that India has remained a knowledge hub since times immemorial and also had the distinction of being the treasure house of wisdom.
In his inaugural address to the 3-day convention on ‘Knowledge Resources in India’ with special reference to Jammu and Kashmir at University of Kashmir, here today, the Governor said that the rich repository of the holy scriptures and the intellectual and philosophical teachings of revered Sufis, Saints and Hermits and other spiritual personalities and institutions of higher learning have made an enormous contribution towards India being known as a ‘Knowledge Guru’ over the centuries. Be it philosophy, spirituality, statecraft, diplomacy, mathematics, astronomy, medicine, science, technology and varied other branches of knowledge, India has remained in the fore-front, he added.
The convention has been organized by the Allama Iqbal Library, University of Kashmir.
The Governor also highlighted that in the contemporary world, India is recognized for its very large corpus of educated and trained human resource, which is in the younger age group. He said that an enormous national challenge is to optimally exploit this reservoir of talent, to connect to the old and the new knowledge, and to combine wisdom with information and workout appropriate solutions to the challenges facing the nation.
Stating that there is no dearth of knowledge or information, the Governor indicated that the real challenge is to organize systems and mechanisms for ensuring that the required information is available to the people at the cutting edge level and to those at the margins of the society, for bringing about a positive transformation in their lives. He said that in striving to establish a knowledge-based society it is of utmost importance to have ready access to relevant and appropriate information.
Referring to the vision to establish a knowledge-based society in Jammu and Kashmir, the Governor said that “we need to take time-bound initiatives to upgrade our existing research efforts and offer the best available technologies to the managers and processors of the vast amount of knowledge which is already available within the State”.
The Governor called for closer synergy and coordination between various universities and other institutions of learning and training in the State by ensuring effective linkages and sharing of infrastructure for securing quicker outcomes. He emphasized the need for further strengthening and modernizing the libraries in the State to make these as the centres of knowledge and excellence. He also referred to the state-of-the-art facilities available for students, researchers and all other information and knowledge seekers at the Allama Iqbal Library of the University of Kashmir.
