| PDP MLA asks for CM’s apology to Gujjars | | | Early Times Report Jammu May 11 Coming down heavily upon State Government for brutal action against Gujjars, the Peoples Democratic Party leader and Member Legislative Assembly Chowdhary Zulfkar Ali MLA Darhal said that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah must apologise to Gujjar community by taking moral responsibility of the inhuman and ruthless act of State Police and Forest Departments officials who razed 50 houses of nomads and injured dozens of Gujjars including children and women at village Karinala Chak a day before yesterday. In a statement the senior PDP leader and Ch. Zulfikar Ali stated that National Conference led government is bent upon to sabotage the Tribal Status of Gujjars that’s why the state government has not taken any solid action against any officials of police or forest who are clearly and evidently responsible for this inhuman act. He said by ordering a Magisterial enquiry in this prima-facie case Chief Minister wants to throw this sensitive matter in the cold store. He said the entire Gujjar community feels hurt and antagonized as 50 huts of the hapless community were burnt and were made houseless. He alleged that no notice as required under law was served to the occupants of that piece of land and without the service of notice no eviction by force can take place and if anybody does so it is contrary to the law of the land. He has also made a specific mention that the Government of India by an Act of Parliament namely “the Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act 1996” has already conferred the right to such people in order to recognize and vest the forest rights and occupation in forest land in forest dwelling Scheduled Tribes and other traditional forest dwellers who have been residing in such forests. Further adding to it he said that he will bring a similar legislation in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly in its forthcoming budget session to adopt the same in the State of Jammu and Kashmir as well in order to confer the similar rights to the occupants of this State. Mr. Chowdhary has demanded adequate compensation to the affected families besides magisterial enquiry into the incident and stern action against the erring officials and officers. He also stressed upon the State Government to ensure that no such incident should occur in future.
