| Food stores to remain open on Sundays | | | Early Times Report Jammu, May 11 -The Minister for Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution and Industries and Commerce, S. S. Slathia today called for effective multi-tier and multi-disciplinary monitoring of Public Distribution System in the state to ensure that the poor people get the benefit of the subsidized ration especially in the remote and far flung areas. He also ordered creation of a mechanism under which greater transparency and accountability at all levels are ensured. He asked the officers to safeguard consumer rights and streamline the Public Distribution System in the State. Slathia was reviewing supply position under PDS in Jammu region at a high level meeting held here today. Secretary CAPDD, K. B. Jandial and Director CAPDD, Hemant K. Sharma was present in the meeting. Speaking on the occasion Slathia emphasized on making concerted efforts at all levels to make the system more accountable and transparent and ensure that the benefits reach the target groups .He said that the officers should optimally use the available resources and ensure that the quality of supplies is up to the mark and the same reaches the people on time .Stressing on the supply and distribution of food material in the remote areas especially in Doda ,Kishtwar and Poonch he directed the officers to make sure that supplies reach these areas by 10th of every month so that the people do not face any hardships because of food shortage. In order to improve the working of the system he directed the officials to ensure close monitoring and work on three-tier surveillance system at state, district and village level so that there is a higher level of transparency in the public distribution system. He also proposed formulating village level committees to maximize public participation in the system and make it more responsive to the needs of the public and strengthen the delivery mechanism at the ground level.
