| Zardari echoes Obama's words | | | It is after nearly 60 years that the establishment in Islamabad has admitted that India was not a threat to Pakistan. Pakistan President,Asif Ali Zardari, has gone even to the extent of saying that he never treated India as a threat to Pakistan. He may not have found in India threat to the very survival of Pakistan. But his wife and father-in-Law had different notion.Whether that notion was the outcome of political expediency both Z.A.Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto would not hide their venom against India. The t wo would occasionally talk of a 1000 years war with India.Over the decades it has been seen that the establishment in Islamabad whether in the hands of elected representatives or under the control of the military dictators would usually play two cards for ensuring its survival. One was the usual Kashmir card and the second was its deep perception that India held a threat to Pakistan.Without realising what led to the creation of Bangladesh successive Pakistani leaders would blame India for having encouraged and aided anti-Pakistan movement in erstwhile East Pakistan. If people in Bangladesh revolted against the establishment in Islamabad it was the result of atrocities committed by the ruling leadership and the Pakistani forces.Islamabad felt it better to blame India for the balkanisation of Pakistan as it would cement anti-India sentiments in Pakistan and allow Islamabad a chance to retain the goodwill of the people of Bangladesh.Pakistan has succeeded in that mission because after the end of Sheikh Mujib-ur-Rehman rule Bangladesh adopted anti-India postures.Even it has allowed Pakistani commandos to train youth in militancy. In the context of these developments Zardari's statement is music to the ears of New Delhi. What is important is the change of mindset of the Pakistan rulers. What prompted Zardari to find in India a friend of Pakistan is not important because it is no longer a secret that the continued US pressure on Islamabad forced Zardari to echo what US President,Barack Obama, had told him (Zardari) during his recent visit to Washington. Zardari had been repeatedly told in America that not India but the Talibans were Pakistan's enemy.Hope Zardari sticks to his stand and start improving relations with India. That is possible if Islamabad intensifies its campaign against the Talibans and take steps which could prevent militants from infiltrating into Jammu and Kashmir.Zardari and his Prime Minister,,Yousaf Raza Gilani, need to tackle internal problems in Pakistan instead of trying to poke their nose in the internal matters of India
