early times report

Jammu, Oct 6: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Rohiin Chandan has lauded the Jammu and Kashmir administration’s decisive action to impose an immediate ban on the storage, sale, display, and distribution of the smokeless tobacco-based product 'Cool Lip' in Kathua district. The move, driven by growing health concerns, particularly among children and youth, has been hailed as a significant step toward safeguarding public health and protecting the future of the younger generation. Chandan has called for the extension of this ban across the entire Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir to address the alarming rise in smokeless tobacco-related health issues.
The Kathua district administration’s decision comes in response to mounting evidence highlighting the detrimental effects of smokeless tobacco products like 'Cool Lip,' which have gained popularity among young people due to their easy accessibility and deceptive marketing as a “safe” alternative to smoking. These products, however, pose severe health risks, including oral cancer, gum disease, and other chronic conditions. Chandan emphasized that the ban is a proactive measure to curb the growing menace of tobacco addiction, which threatens the physical and mental well-being of the youth, who represent the future of Jammu and Kashmir.
“This is a serious issue that demands urgent attention,” said Rohiin Chandan. “The future of our young generation is at stake, and we cannot allow harmful substances like 'Cool Lip' to jeopardize their health and potential.
I appeal the administration to take this bold step and urge the Jammu and Kashmir government to implement a comprehensive ban across the Union Territory. A unified approach is essential to protect our children and youth from the clutches of smokeless tobacco addiction.”
Chandan highlighted the need for greater awareness campaigns to educate communities about the dangers of smokeless tobacco and the importance of making informed choices.
He stressed that the administration, in collaboration with civil society, educational institutions, and health organizations, must work together to ensure strict enforcement of the ban and prevent the proliferation of such harmful products. Additionally, he called for stringent measures against manufacturers and distributors who target vulnerable populations with aggressive marketing tactics.
Chandan also urged parents, teachers, and community leaders to play an active role in guiding the youth away from harmful substances and fostering a culture of health and responsibility.
“Protecting our children is a collective responsibility. This ban is a starting point, but we must go further to ensure a tobacco-free future for Jammu and Kashmir,” he added.
He reiterated the BJP’s commitment to supporting policies that prioritize public health and youth welfare, pledging to work closely with the administration to advocate for a territory-wide prohibition on smokeless tobacco products. He expressed confidence that such measures would pave the way for a healthier, more prosperous J&K.
