| Dillawar’s cavalcade smashed in Baramulla | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar: At least twelve Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) activists were injured and their vehicles smashed by angry anti-poll protesters at cement bridge, Baramulla on Monday morning. Reports said early Monday morning hundreds of people mainly youth at Cement Bridge, Baramulla surrounded the cavalcade of PDP candidate for Baramulla Parliamentary constituency, Mohammad Dilawar Mir that was on its way to Uri from Rafiabad for an election rally. The angry protesters surrounded the cavalcade comprising more than twenty five vehicles, pelted stones, smashing their window panes and injuring many PDP Activists. However, Mir, who was in the last vehicle of the cavalcade escaped, unhurt when his driver changed the route and made a quick exit from the trouble spot. Eyewitnesses said that the surprise attack by the anti poll protesters forced many PDP workers to make a hasty retreat and many injured refused to visit the hospital for treatment and preferred to run for safety. Eyewitnesses said that soon after the incident; shop keepers pulled down their shutters and ran for safety. Troops and police also reached the spot and started search operation to nab the stone pelting youth. Farooq Ahmad Dar son of Mohammad Ramzan Dar, a PDP worker, who was undergoing treatment at District hospital, Baramulla for injuries, told Press Bureau of India that more than twenty people sustained injuries in the stone pelting and the same number of vehicles were damaged in the incident. “The attack came all of a sudden. It felt like the stones were raining from the sky,” Dar said, adding “The angry protesters thrashed us with sticks before dragging us out of the vehicles,” he added. He said scores of workers suffered injuries while trying to escape the protesters wrath. Dar said some injured did not even dare to go to the hospital for treatment. “We were on our way to Uri when the youth surrounded our vehicles and started pelting stones. The angry protesters boarded our buses and dragged us out,” Abdul Majid Teli, a PDP worker told Press Bureau of India. “There was a complete chaos and confusion. We didn’t know where to run for safety. The protesters carrying stones and sticks chased us away,” Teli added. Senior Superintendent of police (SSP) Baramulla, Vipul Kumar, told Press Bureau of India that some people hurled stones on the cavalcade of PDP workers resulting in injuries to six people while damaging equal number of vehicles. “Some people hurled stones on the PDP rally resulting in injuries to six people. Same numbers of vehicles were also damaged in the stone pelting,” Kumar said. Meanwhile, PDP candidate for Baramulla Parliamentary constituency, Mohammad Dilawar Mir has accused rival National Conference for carrying out the attack.
