Collective Responsibility | | | Recently Defence Minister Rajnath Singh stated that the defence and security are the collective responsibility of the entire nation, and strengthening the defence sector is not just the duty of one institution or government but the shared resolve of all Indians. He urged all States and Union Territories to become active partners in building a robust, globally competitive defence manufacturing ecosystem. Since the day Prime Minister Modi has taken over the reins of the country, India has been focussing on the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat in every sector including the defence sector. Self-reliance in defence is not just a matter of production or economy for the country—it is first and foremost a matter of strategic autonomy directly linked to India’s sovereignty. A nation that cannot produce its own weapons systems or maintain its own supply chains is perpetually vulnerable to external pressures. True independence in the 21st century depends as much on control over defence technology as it does on diplomatic and military capability. As Rajnath Singh aptly put it, strengthening India’s defence ecosystem is a shared resolve of all Indians. This collective spirit must translate into coordinated efforts between the Centre, States, academia, and industry. Over the past few years, India has witnessed encouraging progress. The government’s initiatives, such as the Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP), the establishment of defence industrial corridors in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, and the allocation of record budgets for indigenous procurement, have created a fertile ground for innovation and private participation. The rise of Indian defence start-ups, supported by programmes like iDEX (Innovations for Defence Excellence), has further energised the ecosystem. Defence exports, once negligible, have surged to an all-time high, reflecting growing global confidence in Indian capabilities. India’s journey toward Aatmanirbharta in defence is as much about mindset as it is about machinery. It is about believing that the nation can design, develop, and deliver the tools necessary to safeguard its sovereignty. As the world’s largest democracy, India’s defence self-reliance will not only secure its borders but also strengthen global peace through stability and deterrence. Rajnath Singh’s message, therefore, is both timely and profound — building a strong, self-reliant India is not the job of a few, but the solemn duty of all. |
