Early Times Report UDHAMPUR, Oct 10: The Dean Students welfare committee of Govt. College for Women, Udhampur organised an inter house Mehandi-Competition in the college premises on today to commemorate the festival of Karwa Chauth largely celebrated in North India, under the aegis of IQAC and the able guidance of the principal of the college, Dr. Nalini Pathania. The event started with the formal welcome of Principal of the college, Dr. Nalini Pathania by convener students' welfare committee, Prof. Swarna Devi, HOD Political science. In her opening remarks, the Principal of the college applauded the students and staff for upholding their cultural identity by celebrating such events. She also remarked that Mehndi or Henna has many cultural and symbolic meanings and is applied in Indian weddings and other celebrations. Mehndi symbolizes good luck and positive spirits. It is believed that the longer the mehndi color lasts, the luckier the couple will be. While speaking on the occasion, Convener students' welfare committee motivated the students on the scientific aspect of mehndi application as it helps in stress relieving, headache and fever.Applying Henna to the feet affects many nerve endings. She explained that the word ''Mehndi'' comes from the Sanskrit word mendhika, which means' 'Henna Plant''. The earliest use of Henna-Dye can be traced back to ancient Egypt and Babylon, and it was commonly used in India by the 4th century. Dr. Monika Gupta, Associate Prof. Chemistry, Dr. Indu Khajuria, HOD Chemistry and Dr. Geetanjali Rajput, HOD, English,acted as judges in the event who were very fair and rational in their judgement. Other committee members who co-operated positively in conducting the programme and were actively present on the occasion were Prof. Yash Paul, Kusha Sharma, Dr. Swati Dutt, Dr. Mukesh Kumar, Prof.Shama Rani, Dr. Anita Kumari, Prof. Pooja Bharti, Prof.Yash Kumar, Prof. Simran Khajuria, Dr. Mukteshi Sharma, Prof. Safina Chowdhary. Total 10 Students/Mehandi Artists participated in the event in an enthusiastic manner and manifested their talent in applying Henna in their own different ways, whereShivali Sem. 5th, Tanya Sem. 3rd and Sunita Sem. 1stwere adjudged 1st ,2nd and 3rd respectively.
