| Baramulla may witness higher voter turnout: observers | | | Early Times Report Srinagar,May 12 While the campaigning has come to end for Baramulla and Leh-Ladakh Parliamentary constituencies the political observers are in opinion that Baramullah-Kupwara Lok Sabha segment may not be a spectator to low vote turn put like as low as 24 per cent in Srinagar or 26 per cent in Anantnag and it is likely to be quite brisk in Ladakh constituency. Records reveal that in Ladakh constituency even in 1989 Lok Sabha polls, when five per cent polling and 4.5 per cent polling in Anantnag and Baramullah and no contest were witnessed in Srinagar, Ladakah recorded over 40 per cent vote turnout. In 1996 it was 70 per cent, in 1998 it was about 70 per cent and in 1999 the polling percentage was 68. One may not expect high polling percentage in Baramullah constituency but it is likely to be between 30-35 per cent. Political observers scanning the previous figures are of opinion that the said constituency would see higher percentage as compared to the Srinagar and Anantnag seats. Giving statistics they said the said constituency in 1989 touched the figure of barely five per cent because of the first experience of people with militancy. Thereafter in 1996 it was 35 per cent, followed by 45 per cent in 1998 and 27 per cent in 1999. In 2004 the constituency recorded 35.66 per cent polling and the present trends and the wave set amongst the people have made the observers to believe that it would seee the repetition on the Wednesday's polling. Within the separatist call for poll boycott which may evoke a response in the 10 Assembly segments of Baramullah district, but may fail to get response in the rest five Assembly segments in Kupwara district as compared to Baramullah district. Over 10 lakh voters have to decide the fate of three main contestants, Sharif Din Shariq of the National Conference, Dilawar Mir of the PDP and Sajjad Lone of the peoples' Conference. ‘And the surprising entry of Lone in the poll fray is expected to attract a bigger number of voters in Kupwara district to participate in polling, political circles believe. However they feel that NC has claimed the said seat from 1989-2004 except for 1996 when the National Conference did not participate in the Lok Sabha poll and this year NC has an advantage when majority of 15 Assembly seats have gone to the NC from the Kupwara-Baramullah belt during Polls 2008, they said. Meanwhile high placed sources said that all arrangements have been made for an incident free polling on Wednesday. Several companies of police and paramilitary forces have been shifted from various areas in Anantnag and Srinagar belts and deployed in Baramullah-Kupwara areas for ensuring peaceful polling.
