| Stress on earthquake resistant buildings | | | Early Times Report Jammu, May12-The Divisional Commissioner Jammu, Dr. Pawan Kotwal today called upon the engineers to update their professional skills to design earthquake resistant buildings, particularly in the seismic prone areas. Addressing engineers after inaugurating a three-day training program for Architects and Engineers on Earthquake Resistant Construction and Retrofitting held at Institute of Engineers, Channi Himat here today the Divisional Commissioner asked the participating engineers to make best out of the opportunity to gain expertise for building seismic-proof buildings. He said that it is imperative that the engineers of Jammu and Kashmir to keep themselves abreast with such expertise as the State falls in the list of five highly seismic zones of the country. Engineers from across Jammu division are participating in the 3-day training program in which resource persons from within and outside the State would provide information about updated techniques for constructing earthquake resistant buildings. Kotwal stressed for creating awareness among the people about the safety measures to be taken at the time of construction of their houses. He said that a survey would be conducted to identify unsafe buildings, particularly in the old city, adding that it was the duty of the engineers’ fraternity to make the people aware about the threats posed by the unsafe constructions. Renowned architect of the country, P. K. Das also addressed the inaugural function and gave introductory details about the earthquake resistant construction techniques. Later, the Divisional Commissioner presented a memento to the visiting architect on behalf of Engineers Association.
