| International Nurses Day celebrations | | Nurses pillars of patient-care team: DyCM | | Early Times Report Jammu, May 12- Terming nursing as one of the noblest profession providing succor to ailing patients, Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand Tuesday said that Nurses have a greater responsibility in curing the patients as they are the first ones to administer first aid before the arrival of the doctors. The Deputy Chief Minister was speaking at a function organized in connection with International Day for Nurses by Nurses Association, Government Medical College (GMC) here today. The day is celebrated to mark the 189th birth anniversary of first lady nurse, Madam Florence Nightingale, the Lady with Lamp. Recalling the services of Florence Nightingale in curing the people, Tara Chand said that the dedication of Florence Nightingale in treating patients during war working in unsafe, infectious and difficult conditions is exemplary. He said such selfless service and missionary zeal shown by the great lady requires complete love for the profession which needs to be the imbibed for rendering true service to the patients. Appreciating the Nursing fraternity in discharging their duties, the Deputy Chief Minister said Nurses have been in the fore front in serving the patients in the State. He said that they should also take a lead in acquiring latest skills of the profession and hone their skills further to suit the present times. The Deputy Chief Minister said that the government realises the strenuous working conditions under which the Nurses are discharging their duties in a profession manner. “Greet with a smile, as smile can do miracles which not even medicines can do”, he advised and added that Nurses have a pivotal role in patient-care team which comprises of Doctors, Nurses and Para-medics. A scintillating cultural program was also presented on the occasion amidst thunderous applause. Mementoes were also distributed among Nurses showing excellence in their profession. The function was attended by Principal GMC, Jammu, Dr. Rajinder Singh, Administrator, GMC, Jammu, Dr. Rakesh Khajuria, Matron GMC, Jammu, Sister Pushpa, various Heads of the Departments and Nurses of the GMC and Associated Hospitals. Later, Nurses Association, GMC, Jammu, presented a charter of demands to the Deputy Chief Minister for consideration.
