Early Times Report JAMMU, Oct 15: The College of Nursing, AIIMS Jammu, organized a grand Lamp Lighting and Oath Taking Ceremony today, marking the commencement of the new academic session for the second batch of B.Sc. Nursing students. The ceremony, an age-old tradition in nursing education, signifies the students' formal induction into the noble profession of nursing - a journey of compassion, service, and lifelong learning. The event was graced by Prof. (Dr.) Shakti Kumar Gupta, Executive Director & CEO, AIIMS Jammu, as Chief Guest; along with senior faculty members, staff and students. The program began with the Lamp Lighting Ceremony, symbolizing the light of knowledge, wisdom, and selfless service. The lighting of the lamp represents the passing on of the flame of dedication and compassion from experienced professionals to new entrants in the nursing fraternity. It embodies the ideals of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, whose lamp became a global symbol of care and hope. Following this, the Oath Taking Ceremony was held, where first-year students pledged to uphold the ethics, integrity, and humane values of the nursing profession. The oath was administered by Prof. (Dr.) Rimple Sharma, Principal, College of Nursing, AIIMS Jammu. In her address, Dr. Rimple Sharma emphasized that nursing is not merely a profession but a sacred calling to serve humanity. She encouraged students to uphold the triad of Compassion, Commitment, and Competence in their professional practice and to continually strive for excellence through empathy and continuous learning. In his inspiring address, Prof. (Dr.) Shakti Kumar Gupta welcomed the new batch of nursing students into the AIIMS family and shared heartfelt reflections on the spirit of the ceremony. He said that while modern hospitals may boast the best infrastructure and technology, "without nurses, the system cannot breathe." Describing nurses as "the bridge between science and humanity - between treatment and care," he emphasized that compassion remains timeless even in an era of technological advancement. Dr. Gupta urged students to uphold the values of teamwork, empathy, and humility, adding that "machines can assist, but they can never replace the warmth of a human touch, the reassurance in a nurse's voice, or the empathy in her eyes." Encouraging the students to enjoy their journey at AIIMS Jammu, he said, "These years will not just make you professionals - they will shape your character, your friendships, and your outlook toward life. Let your education give you not just a career, but a cause." Concluding his address, he reminded them of the sacredness of their chosen path: "To care for one life is a blessing, but to care for many is a calling- and you, my dear students, have chosen that calling." The event reflected the solemnity, pride and enthusiasm associated with the noble nursing profession, marking a memorable beginning to the students' academic journey. |
