10/16/2025 9:36:56 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Oct 16: Doctors at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Jammu, successfully performed a Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) procedure on a patient suffering from Trigeminal Neuralgia, a condition that causes severe, electric shock-like pain in the face.
The 67-year-old male patient from Kathua district had been enduring intense facial pain for several years. The pain was so severe that he was unable to eat properly or even wash his face. He presented to the Pain Clinic at AIIMS Jammu, where he was diagnosed with Trigeminal Neuralgia.
The minimally invasive RFA procedure was performed by Dr. Kanika Gupta, Assistant Professor, Department of Anaesthesiology, under X-ray guidance, and assisted by Dr. Marvi, Senior Resident, Department of Anaesthesiology. Following the procedure, the patient experienced complete relief from pain and has since resumed normal daily activities without discomfort. He is now off all pain medications and reports a marked improvement in his quality of life.
Dr. Sunana Gupta, Additional Professor and Head, Department of Anaesthesiology, said:
"Interventional pain management offers new hope to patients who have long suffered from chronic pain conditions that are resistant to conventional therapies. Our department is committed to expanding these minimally invasive services so that more patients can live pain-free and regain their daily functioning."
Trigeminal Neuralgia is often referred to as the "suicide disease" because of the extreme, debilitating pain it causes. The success of this case underscores the growing role of advanced pain management techniques at AIIMS Jammu.
Prof. (Dr.) Shakti Kumar Gupta, Executive Director & CEO, AIIMS Jammu, lauded the team for their achievement and stated:
"The success of this case highlights the importance of interventional pain management in improving patients' quality of life. With advanced equipment and trained specialists, AIIMS Jammu is now capable of offering world-class care for patients suffering from chronic and cancer-related pain."
The availability of state-of-the-art equipment, including the latest Radiofrequency Ablation machine, has enabled AIIMS Jammu to provide cutting-edge, patient-centric care in the field of interventional pain medicine.
