| Airstrips to be expanded | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, May 13-All mini-airstrips in Jammu and Kashmir are being expanded and developed with the help of technical expertise in a time-bound manner while the facilities at the two major airports at Srinagar and Jammu would be further augmented. This was stated by the Chief Secretary S S Kapur while chairing a high-level meeting of officers called to review the functioning of airports in the State. The meeting was attended by Chairman, Airport Authority of India, V. P. Aggarwal, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, Khurshid Ahmad Ganai, Director, Civil Aviation, J&K, S. Katoch, Special Secretary to Chief Minister, Zafar Ahmad, besides other senior officers. The meeting discussed in detail the extension program of airstrips of Leh, Kargil and Kishtwar, besides working out feasibility for developing new airstrips at hilly areas of Surankote and Rajouri. Aggarwal assured full cooperation to the State Government for taking up the work on these airstrips and also for providing necessary technical know how in this regard. Kapur asked the concerned authorities to prepare a proposal for inclusion of one MIG-17 helicopter for the State in the Tribal Sub-plan which would be forwarded to the Centre for necessary funding. He said other states have also procured the helicopters from the Centre under the same scheme. The Chief Secretary also called for immediate follow-up of the minutes of the meeting so that the same could be discussed with the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. He said the next meeting, which is scheduled to be in July, will sort out all the issues and the work on these airstrips will be started.
