Make treatment cost –effective : Vohra to doctors

SRINAGAR, MAY 14 – The Governor, Mr. N. N. Vohra, has called upon the experts in the field of medical science to evolve appropriate approaches to provide cost-effective treatment of various ailments, at prices which are well within the reach of the less privileged segments of the society.
The Governor was addressing the Inaugural Session of the three-day 55th Annual Conference of the Indian Association of Cardiovascular Thoracic Surgeons at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Complex, here this evening.
The Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery of the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Srinagar, is hosting the Conference in which eminent heart, vascular and lung surgeons of the country and abroad are participating.
The Governor said that the incidence of cardiovascular diseases, particularly coronary artery diseases, has witnessed increasing trend in the past years and along with it the cost of treatment of such ailments has also gone high. He said that this calls for an urgent need to make the treatment of such diseases cost-effective and within the reach of various sections of the society.

The Governor also emphasized the need for expanding and upgrading healthcare services by according more focus on primary health care facilities, adding that this sector needs drastic improvement. He said that we need more doctors and paramedics, improved infrastructure and latent equipments to meet the healthcare needs of a vast spectrum of society and at the same time, ensuring greater evenness in the spread of the facilities at various levels. He said that the galaxy of experts participating in this Conference should also deliberate upon and suggest how the healthcare system can be better organized, particularly the management of cardiovascular related ailments, in a country like ours with over one billion population.


The Director, Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, Srinagar, Prof. Abdul Hamid Zargar, gave details about the functioning of the Institute and diagnostic and treatment facilities available there. He also threw light on the various such medical conferences being hosted by the SKIMS later this summer.

The President of the Association, Dr. Vivek Jawli, said that surgery has come of age in India with patients from across the globe visiting the country for super-specialized medicare and surgeries. He said that the cardiovascular thoracic surgery is becoming the pride of India.

The Dean SKIMS, Prof. Imtiyaz Ali, Secretary, Indian Association of Cardiovascular Thoracic Surgeons, Prof. C. P. Srivastava and Professor and Head of Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, SKIMS, Srinagar, Dr. A. G. Ahanger also addressed the inaugural session of the Conference styled as CT CON 2009.
