Fingers crossed , arrangements ready for counting

JAMMU, MAY 14 – As the Lok Sabha elections reaches its climax, all arrangements have been put in place for ensuring smooth counting of votes in the two Parliamentary constituencies (PC) in Jammu Division on May 16. Counting will also take place for Bhadarwah Assembly constituency where by-elections took place along with Parliamentary elections. Bhadarwah Assembly seat had fallen vacant due to resignation by Mr. Ghulam Nabi Azad on getting elected to the Rajya Sabha
For Jammu Parliamentary seat which is the largest Parliamentary constituency in the State, as many as 600 personnel have been deployed for the counting process. The entire process will take place in the two adjacent complexes of MAM College and Government Polytechnic College, Jammu where 20 counting halls have been set up. A total of 175 tables proportional to the number of polling stations and a maximum range of 10-13 each have been installed in the counting halls. Counting of votes of each Assembly segment will be done in a separate counting hall with one Assistant Returning Officer to supervise the counting process.
Likewise, for Udhampur Parliamentary constituency, more than 400 counting staff will be deployed in the 17 counting halls set up in Degree College, Kathua, venue of counting.
As many as three persons will be deployed at each table for tabulation of results and their transmission to the Assistant Returning Officer, who after compilation will send the trends to the Returning Officer and the media centres. According to Returning Officer (RO), Jammu PC, Dr. Mandeep K. Bhandari and RO, Udhampur PC, Ms Mandeep Kaur all arrangements have been finalsed to ensure smooth counting of votes polled during Lok Sabha elections in their respective constituencies. Elections in Jammu Lok Sabha seat took place on April 16 in the first phase while as in Udhampur Lok Sabha seat on April 23 in the second phase.
Election Observers will also be persent at the counting venue. For Jammu PC, Mr. Raj Pratap Singh has been appointed as Observer for Samba, Vijaypur, Gandhinagar, Bishnah, R. S. Pura and Suchetgarh Assembly segments, Mrs. Uma Mukherjee for Nagrota, Jammu east, Jammu west, Marh, Raipur-Domana, Akhnoor and Chamb Assembly segments, Mr. Girja Dayal for Nowshera, Darhal, Rajouri and Kalakote Assembly segments and Mr. Anurag Yadav has been made Observer for Surankote, Mendhar and Poonch-Haveli Assembly segments. For Udhampur PC, Mr. Ramesh Bindorao Zalki is the Observer for Bani, Basohli, Kathua, Billawar and Hiranagar Assembly segments, Mr. K. S. S. V. P. Raddy for Gulabgarh, Reasi, Gool-Arnas, Udhampur, Chenani and Ramnagar segments, Mr. Jitendra Kumar for Ramban and Banihal segments while Neerja is the Observer for Kishtwar, Inderwal, Doda and Bhadarwah Assembly segments.
To facilitate the media persons in covering the counting process, Information department has set up hi-tech Media Centres both at the Office complex of Directorate of Information, Mubarik Mandi and at the respective counting venues. The Media Centre at Directorate of Information, Jammu, will be available at phone numbers: 0191-2578835, 2540088, 2548165 and 2548388 (Fax).
For Jammu PC, the Media Centre equipped with LCD projector and internet facility would be set up at MAM College, Jammu having phone numbers: 0191-2437156, 2437166 and 2437176. According to the Returning Officer, Jammu PC, as per the guidelines of the Election Commission of India, the media persons will not be allowed to go near the counting halls and the results of various rounds will be conveyed to them through the Media Centres.

Meanwhile, stage is also set for counting of votes for the Bhadarwah Assembly segment where by-poll was held on April 23 along with Lok Sabha polls in Udhampur PC. The venue of the counting is Tehsil Office, Doda where one counting hall having six tables would be set up. In all 22 rounds of counting will be held and supervised by the Returning Officer, Mr. M. M. Gupta. To keep the media updated with the latest trends, a Media Centre has been set up having phone number: 01996-233328.
The fate of 21 contestants from Jammu PC and 12 from Udhampur PC sealed in the EVMs will be decided on May 16. Similarly, eight contestants had contested in the Bhadarwah by-polls.
